Every attempt is a win, every try is a learning opportunity.

Every attempt is a win, every try is a learning opportunity.

When our performance is congruent with our identity and values, it’s easy and fun to talk about. But if our score is "low" or maybe we're a top competitor and missed the podium, there can be awkward feelings of shame or embarrassment around it.

Psychologically, shame is the result of a dissonance between your standards and your actions. When it comes to your performance, you feel like you should or could have done better.

It can be helpful to have high standards for yourself— they can motivate you to achieve greatness in your life and sport. But they can be condemning if they push you to feel shame about who you are and the worth of your dog.

Your standards for yourself and your work come from your story. Do you know where? Who was it that told you that you needed to stand on the podium or achieve a certain score? Who is it that has so much power over you? Spend some time identifying those stories and those voices. Doing so will help you take back some of their power.

You’re ok. Own it. Rock what you got. If you have the opportunity to compete, that is a gift. You may not have earned the score you hoped, but you got to do the thing with your best teammate, your dog— and that’s better than what a lot of people have.

Next Time You Feel Ashamed of Your Score or Performance, Remember This…
Everyone is in process. You’re in process. Own it. There’s nothing wrong with it. If you’re not allowed to be in process, then you’ll never accomplish anything worthwhile.

Next time someone asks or watches a performance you imagined would be better, take a deep breath, remember that you’re enough. And then make solid eye contact and tell them, without shame, guilt, or that squirmy-I-can’t-wait-to-change-the-subject feeling. You have nothing to feel ashamed of. You stepped on that field, in the ring, entered that event, and you took a snapshot of a moment of your process. You did it! I'm proud of you

Excellence is the result of CLEAR and GENEROUS reinforcement. If you don't like what you are getting... if your results aren't "enough".... take a look at how you reinforce your dog. Are you being clear in your criteria? Is your reinforcement valuable and generous?

Be Clear. Be Generous.

If nothing else when it comes to competing with your dog, stay humble.

This past weekend we competed in the 2021 SDDA National Boneyard Challenge. It’s modelled after the Top Dog challenge, search five rooms for five odours in five minutes. After coming off a fabulous weekend winning our fourth Elite title, I was super stoked going in and thought we would have this in the bag….

Last year we made the top 10 Elite dogs in Canada, this year I will be surprised if we’re not in the bottom 10. Needless to say, it was a lesson in humility. But as always, I love my dog more than I love the sport and we had an absolute riot competing in this super fun event.

Win or lose I always come home with the best prize of all, my dog.

We are soooo excited to officially share our handout on the Stages of Training. Thank you Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin for bringing this to life! This handout is used for clients to follow their dog's training progress!
It goes through all the stages of learning:
1. Acquisition (get the behavior)
2. Fluency (add the cue)
3. Generalization (proof the behavior)
4. Maintenance (maintain the behavior)

Edit to clarify:
1. This is FREE for you to use/make copies of for clients, but not the edit.
2. “As taught by Jean Donaldson” refers to Push, Stick, Drop

Thanks for all the support! 🐾💙🐾

Just like the supermodels in the 90s who wouldn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000, make sure that the reward your dog is working for is worth their effort.

As 2020 winds down, I’m grateful to have had the opportunities we did to chalk up a few more accomplishments to Team Glitch’s resume. The list is much longer than I anticipated when our world changed back in March. We shot our first film, got our Senior Dock Diving title, became the first Canadian GSD to earn a DMWYD Triple Crown, earned a first place in our regional SDDA Elite Boneyard Challenge, and cracked the top ten Elite SDDA dogs list in Canada. I’m super proud of my girl and love all the things we do together.

But remember, “winning isn’t everything; wanting to win is”. Whether it’s teaching your dog to sit or earning titles, the journey with your dog is yours and yours alone. And any step you take on that journey is a victory.
