500km is a long way and with all the elevation gain it feel even further. That is why we started the 500km club, an award to those who have ran an accumulated distance of 500km.

There have been 2 people so far who have earned the hoodie. They are from Edmonton and from Calgary. Who will be next to have their name added to the club?

The sun just set as the runners are out on their 13th yard. Now comes the tough part of the temps dropping, the dark and with each lap fewer people to keep you company.

The start of yard 8 at the Oldman Backyard Ultra. The weather is warming up but the runners are in great spirits and ready for one more.

Back-to-Back Runs Build Durability

Getting out for one big long run may feel like the best way to train but it might not be the most effective.

Getting out for two medium long runs on consecutive days means day two has tired legs and gets similar benefits to a single long run. The upside is you recover quicker and reduce injury risk from two back to back runs instead of one really long run.

Back to back long runs teach you to run on tired legs, to keep moving forward and learn to run efficiently when tired.

Remember…long runs are about a controlled easy pace, no need to go too hard and increase the injury risk.

Training Tip Tuesday

Run your easy runs easy! Too many people end up running their easy runs too hard. This run should feel really easy and slow, the kind of run you can easily chat with a friend.

Easy runs help build the aerobic system, which we all need for ultras and trail runs, while providing the opportunity to recovery from the hard runs. The recovery helps reduce the training load and allows the body to adapt to the stimulus of the main workouts( long runs, speed work, hill workouts, etc)

A great place to add this run is after a main workout. So if you do a hill workout on Tuesday, run easy on Wednesday, then another quality workout on Thursday. After an easy run on Friday you are ready for a good long run on Saturday.

So remember it is almost impossible to run your easy run too easy but you can run it too hard without much trouble.

As the weather warms up and the snow starts to melt we are excited about this years Iron Legs race. As we are back at Paddy’s Flat Group Site it will be great to see runners relax around the fire after finishing a great day on the trails. Who is joining us this year? How many finishes do you have?

Have you ever had to stop mid-race because your stomach turned on you??? Yeah...you’re not alone.

GI issues are one of the most common issues in trail and ultra running and often lead to a DNF. Nutrition and hydration are usually the culprit. Nothing kills a race faster then an angry gut.

Too much, too fast
Fluids and calories overload the gut and the faster they go into the stomach, the quicker the issues can arise. The body can’t keep up and leads to nausea, sloshing or worse.

Wrong Fuel
Too much of the same type of carbs can cause many issues. Variety can help with this and testing in training.

Hydration Imbalance
Drink too little - Dehydration
Drink too much - Dilution (electrolyte imbalance)
Both can cause stomach issues.

Effort vs. Digestion
The harder you push(intensity), the less blood flow your gut gets. Test the types and quantities of food during training. Even “safe” food can causee problems later in a race.

How to fix? Train your gut
Test the foods you want in training and develop a stratagy on your long runs. Never try new things on race day.

Remember
Start simple - Small amounts and simple foods.
Be consistent - Take in food on all your long runs.
Adjust based on what your body tells you

The Proposed BCT Trail Centre đź’š

Did you know 🤔

The proposed BCT Trail Centre would be funded through dedicated grants and donor-supported fundraising, set aside specifically for this project. These funds will not impact trail construction or ongoing trail maintenance.

The need for a permanent Trail Centre was first identified in 2017 when upgrades to the West Bragg Creek trailhead, parking area, washrooms and maintenance compound highlighted the long-term need for a purpose-built facility to support our growing trail network and community.

We want to hear from you! To learn more and share your feedback, please visit www.braggcreektrails.org and complete the Trail Centre Engagement Survey. The survey is open until February 28.

Thank you for helping shape the future of WBC đź’š
