Well, that’s a first in 18 years of training gun dogs. I had to rescue a Lab that was swimming in circles, using only his front legs, until fatigue started to set in. Definitely not a situation you want to encounter in the field late fall. Ultimate Gun Dog

Jake is a young male Labrador that completed our Started Gun Dog Program. At this stage of his training, he has been introduced to launchers, land retrieves, and water retrieves.

The only challenge we encountered was with his delivery. Jake is a very busy-minded dog, and as soon as he saw my hand reaching for the bumper or bird, he would repeatedly spit it out and pick it back up instead of holding it calmly.

We corrected this using elements of our force-fetch foundation, but the biggest improvement came from simply refusing to take the bird or bumper until Jake held it quietly and confidently. Once he realized that a calm, steady hold was required before I would accept the retrieve, the behavior quickly improved. He now delivers much more consistently with a quiet, controlled hold.
