If your dog seems more tired, less playful, or just not quite themselves in the heat...you’re not imagining it.

Summer weather can affect everything from energy levels to patience and focus. Even normal activity can feel more demanding when the body is working harder to stay cool.

Heat can also make dogs more easily overwhelmed, which may show up as restlessness, irritability, or faster fatigue during walks and play.

The key isn’t to push through it, it’s to adjust expectations, shorten activity in peak heat, and prioritize cooler, calmer environments when needed.

Morning vs Evening Walks in Summer: It’s Not Always as Simple as “Cooler is Better.” ☀️🐾

Morning walks are usually the safest choice because both air and ground temperatures are lower. Evenings can be misleading as pavement and asphalt often stay hot long after the sun goes down, even if it feels cooler outside.

On extreme heat days, timing alone isn’t enough. It may be safer to skip outdoor exercise altogether and choose indoor enrichment or a cooler environment instead.

Every dog handles heat differently, so watch for signs of fatigue and adjust as needed.
