Still coming out of her shy kitty shell, Smokey loves to get affection, then play. She loves playing with wand toys and jingling ball toys, and especially enjoys cardboard scratchers. She truly likes licking her foster mom, being brushed for short stints and playfully biting the comb. Her luxurious coat must be brushed daily or every other day and she’s used to two types of litter boxes. Now all Smokey needs to shine sweetly and brightly fur-ever is a patient and loving adoptive home.

How in the world did my indoor cat get fleas?

Fleas are the ultimate hitch-hikers! They can be brought into your flea-free home on shoes, bags, clothes and other pests like mice. While we don't see a lot of fleas in Calgary, they definitely do exist and can find their way into your home.

Regular flea prevention can help keep the one flea that came through your open door from turning into hundreds. Flea prevention works because if a flea bites a cat that has been regular treated, they ingest a little of their blood. Flea prevention is absorbed into the blood stream which results in death of the flea.

My cat has fleas and they haven't had any treatment, what do I do?

Make an appointment with your vet to get treatment! It may require a couple treatments to ensure you are catching all the life stages of the flea and not just the adult. Then it is time to clean! All bedding and soft items should be washed in a hot water cycle often, carpets/rugs/couches should be vacuumed daily and the dirt should be disposed of outside immediately. If vacuuming is insufficient, a steam cleaner can be used to help treat a stubborn infestation.

If you choose to use insecticides, ensure you are using something cat safe as many insecticides contain chemicals that are deadly to cats.

Not all pest prevention is created equal, in fact, some dog flea prevention is deadly to cats. Cats lack the liver enzymes to metabolize permethrin, which is a common ingredient in dog pest prevention. Symptoms of permethrin poisoning include seizures, drooling, fever, panting, loss of coordination, vomiting and diarrhea. Never use a parasite medication labeled for dogs and if you have a dog, it is encouraged that you keep your dogs and cats separate for 48 hours until the topical treatment is completely dried and brushed out, reducing the risk of accidental poisoning.
