In July 2026, veterinarians confirmed Saskatchewan's first case of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV2). RHDV2 is a highly contagious and often fatal disease of domestic rabbits, feral rabbits, wild rabbits and hares. It doesn't cause disease in humans or other animal species.

🐇 If you own rabbits, please take these important steps:

• contact your local veterinarian to have rabbits annually vaccinated for RHDV2
• keep rabbits housed indoors since the disease can be spread by contact or through food
• prevent contact with wild rabbits, hares or feral rabbits

🥬 Cyclospora in the News – Should You Be Concerned About Your Exotic Pet?

If you’ve recently heard about Cyclospora in the news, you may be wondering whether your produce-loving exotic pet is at risk.

The good news is that there is currently no evidence that Cyclospora cayetanensis infects exotic pets. This parasite is considered specific to humans, and experts do not believe rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, or other common exotic pets become infected by eating contaminated produce.

That said, it’s still important to practice good food hygiene:
🐰 Wash fresh produce thoroughly before offering it to your pet.
🦜 Store fruits and vegetables properly.
🦎 Remove uneaten fresh food promptly to keep it clean and safe.

Providing fresh, clean produce is an important part of a healthy diet for many exotic pets. If you have any questions about your pet’s nutrition or food safety, our team is always happy to help!

Keeping Your Rabbit Cool This Summer ☀️🐰

Rabbits don't tolerate heat well, and temperatures above 24°C can put them at risk of heat stress. As the weather warms up, a few simple changes can help keep your bunny safe and comfortable.

Here are some tips:
🐇 Keep your rabbit indoors in air conditioning whenever possible, or provide a cool, well-ventilated space out of direct sunlight.
💧 Make sure fresh, cool water is always available. Offering both a water bottle and a bowl can encourage drinking.
🧊 Freeze water bottles, ceramic tiles, or damp towels for your rabbit to lie beside (never force them onto something cold).
🥬 Offer fresh leafy greens that have been rinsed and are still slightly wet to provide extra hydration.
🌬️ Use a fan to circulate air, but don't aim it directly at your rabbit.
✂️ Regularly groom long-haired rabbits to remove excess fur and help them stay cooler.
🚫 Avoid outdoor exercise during the hottest parts of the day.

Know the signs of heat stress:
⚠️ Rapid or open-mouth breathing
⚠️ Lethargy or weakness
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Hot ears
⚠️ Reluctance to move or collapse

Heat stress is a medical emergency. If you think your rabbit is overheating, move them to a cool area, dampen their ears with cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your veterinarian immediately.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping your rabbit enjoy a safe and comfortable summer. Stay cool, everybunny! 🩵🐰

Happy Feet, Happy Parrot! 🦜💚

Did you know that regular nail trims are an important part of your parrot’s healthcare?

Overgrown nails can make it difficult for birds to perch comfortably, climb, and play. They can also become caught on toys, cages, or fabrics, which can lead to painful injuries.

A professional pedicure keeps your feathered friend comfortable while ensuring the nails are trimmed safely and without causing unnecessary stress.
