Have you ever seen an eye catheter in a horse?

This is called a subpalpebral lavage (SPL) system. An SPL is a thin flexible tube that is placed through the horses eyelid and woven through the mane with a small port at the end to deliver medication straight to the cornea without the need to touch the head.

Why would we use an SPL?

1. It allows regular eye medication to be given with much less handling.
2. It is safer for the patient and the handler
3. It helps us to avoid further irritation to the eye

When would we use an SPL?

Eye ulcers, inflammation, infection or other eye injuries can be treated with an SPL. Horses that need medication several times throughout the day and night benefit most from this as they can get medication regularly without stressing the eye more than needed.

September comes with a number of changes. Here is one we're incredibly excited to share with you!

Anastasia has worked summers with our team since 2024 and as of August 31st she has officially transitioned into a full time position as our Reproduction Coordinator and Veterinary Assistant.

Anastasia graduated from Lakeland College with a diploma in Animal Sciences with an Equine Major in Spring 2026. Though excited to gain experience in all aspects of practice, she is particularly keen to expand her knowledge of stallion handling and training for our reproduction program.

Please help us in welcoming Alex to the Burwash Equine team as a veterinary receptionist.

She has Bachelors degree in English from St Maryโ€™s University and has extensive experience in customer service environments. Alex grew up around horses and has spent much of her time at her familyโ€™s cattle ranch.

Welcome, Alex! We're so glad that you're a part of our team ๐Ÿ˜

Our summer wouldn't have been the same without these amazing gals. A HUGE shout-out to Faith, Sophie, Madison, Anastasia, Naomi, and Nelley for all of their hard work and enthusiasm for equine medicine.

Pens were picked, horses groomed, rooms restocked, barns swept, mares caught, foals wrangled, equipment cleaned, trucks packed, prescriptions prepared, stallions collected, appointments booked, lab samples run, and on and on the list goes.

We are wishing you all the best of luck as you return to school and return to your home towns. THANK YOU for caring about our patients and clients as much as we do. โค๏ธ

We are very fortunate to have gained an outstanding veterinarian and we can't wait another moment to share the news with you!

After successful completion of her year-long Internship at Burwash Equine Services, Dr. Rachel Haner has become a permanent member of team as Associate Veterinarian.

Many of you would have met Dr. Haner over the past year as she attended in-clinic appointments, managed our hospitalized patients, and provided emergency services. Here's a little bit about Dr. Haner for those of you who haven't had the chance to work with her yet: Dr. Haner completed two years of undergraduate study in the pre-veterinary program at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences before graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2025. During her Internship, Dr. Haner gained valuable experience in internal medicine, sports medicine, reproduction, surgery, and emergency services.

Dr. Haner's primary interests as an Associate Veterinarian are emergency services and reproduction; however, she is also available and keen to see: wellness appointments, castrations, and basic lameness exams.

Welcome to the team, Rachel! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

We love adding talent to this team!
