Ever wonder what we actually do while you're away? Here's a peek behind the front door. 🏡

A typical visit includes:
- A calm hello and a quick look at how your pet is moving, eating and acting
- Meals, fresh water and any medications, exactly as your vet prescribed
- Litter, cage or tank care
- Playtime, cuddles or an on-leash walk
- A home check: doors, windows, lights, mail and plants
- A visit report so you can see how things went

I'm also quietly watching for the small changes that are easy to miss: appetite, litter habits, energy and breathing.

Home is where pets thrive, and keeping their routine steady is the whole point.

Fall in Calgary is beautiful, and it also brings a few seasonal hazards worth knowing about. 🍂

Antifreeze: Ethylene glycol antifreeze tastes sweet, and a very small amount can be serious. Wipe up drips in the garage right away and store jugs up high.

Mushrooms: Wild mushrooms pop up after fall rain, and toxic ones are hard to tell apart from harmless ones. If your pet eats one, call your vet. A photo of the mushroom helps.

Rodent bait: Many people set bait as mice look for warm spots. Some types cause signs days later, so call your vet right away even if your pet seems fine, and keep the package.

Leaf piles: Fun to jump in, but damp piles can hide mould, sticks and sharp objects.

If you're new here, let's say hello properly. 👋

I'm Corrine, but almost everyone calls me Cork. I've been a Registered Veterinary Technologist since 1998, I'm a Certified Professional Pet Sitter, and I founded Corks Critter Care in 1999. We've been caring for Calgary pets since 2000.

My background means I'm comfortable with the things that make many pet parents nervous about leaving home: medications, injections, subcutaneous fluids, diabetic routines, post-surgical care and senior comfort care.

At home, I'm a self-confessed homebody with two German Shepherd brothers who keep me humble.

Calgary's first frosty mornings are here, and our pets notice the change before we do. ❄️

A few small adjustments make a big difference:
- Short-coated, small, young and senior pets feel the cold first. A sweater or coat isn't just for fashion.
- Check outdoor water bowls. They freeze faster than you'd think.
- Before you start the car, knock on the hood. Outdoor and neighbourhood cats sometimes curl up near warm engines.
- Shorter daylight means more walks in the dark, so add a light or reflective gear.

Watch for shivering, lifting paws, or a pet who suddenly wants to turn back home. Those are clear signals it's time to head inside.

Happy Thanksgiving! Before the turkey comes out of the oven, a quick word from your friendly neighbourhood RVT. 🦃

Some of the most common holiday foods are hard on pets:
- Turkey skin, gravy and fatty trimmings can upset tummies and may trigger pancreatitis.
- Cooked bones can splinter.
- Onions and garlic (hello, stuffing) are toxic to dogs and cats.
- Grapes and raisins can be dangerous for dogs.
- Chocolate desserts, and anything sweetened with xylitol, should stay out of reach.
- Roasting string and foil wrappers smell delicious to pets and can cause blockages.

A simple plan: give your pet a small portion of their own food or treat when everyone sits down, and ask guests not to share from their plates.

If your pet eats something worrying, call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic right away.

This Thanksgiving weekend, we're counting our blessings, and many of them have whiskers, paws, feathers and scales. 🍁

Thank you to every Calgary, Airdrie and Chestermere family who trusts us with their pets and their homes. Being invited into your routines, your quiet mornings and your pets' favourite nap spots is something we never take for granted.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it's a good moment to remember that our pets can develop mammary tumours too. 🎀

Dogs and cats have two rows of mammary glands running along the belly, from chest to groin. A lump can appear anywhere along that line, and it can start out as small as a pea.

A few things worth knowing:
- Spay timing can affect mammary tumour risk, especially in dogs. Your veterinarian can help you decide the right timing for your pet.
- In cats, mammary lumps are more often serious, so any lump deserves a prompt vet visit.
- Males can be affected too, though it's uncommon.

An easy habit: once a month, during a belly rub, gently feel along both sides of the belly. If you find anything new, book a vet visit rather than waiting to see if it changes.

Back to school season means new schedules — and sometimes, a lonelier day for the pets left behind. 🎒🐾

If your house is suddenly quieter during the day, your dog may be feeling it too. Pets thrive on routine, and the sudden shift from a full house to an empty one can mean more boredom, more barking, or a lot of wistful staring out the window.
