About 1 month ago we took Invader Zim to the vet for a swollen face and cloudy eye. The vet told us that the swelling is most likely an infection caused by oral cancer, and that yes surgery is possible to try to remove the cancer and affected teeth, however she doesn't feel that it's truly worth it, considering his chances of surviving the anesthesia are low and from previous experience, if the surgery is successful it will only buy us a couple extra months before the cancer comes back. So we are treating the infection with antibiotics and steriods and providing supportive care for Zim for the time being.
So far Zim is doing well, he takes his meds like a champ, eats his soft food like a little piggy and is still super active and friendly as ever. I look forward to "after medicine" cuddle time every night.
Zim is the most amazing hedgehog ever, not even cancer can hinder his outgoing spirit. I'm not quite ready to let him go yet, so I've decided to keep his son from our last litter, and have named him Gir.
Invader Zim is the heart of our breeding program, so unfortunately with everything going on with him, Lucky Urchin Hedgehogs won't have any upcoming litters anytime soon. Right now our focus is going to be on giving Zim the best "however long" we have left with him. I see so much of Zim's amazing personality in Gir, so hopefully in the future we can pick back up where we left off with the next generation. We will still always be here for any hedgehog related questions and advice.
With all that being said, we are a little behind on our messages. We still have one little girl available, she will be our last hoglet for a while, she's a big girl with the softest belly fur imaginable. We are looking for the perfect home for her.
As Lucky Urchin heads into semi-retirement, we would like to thank all our previous adopters and current followers, thank you for loving hedgehogs as much as we do.
