🚨 Porcupine Season 🚨

This patient came in after a run in with a porcupine.

In this case, we had to carefully make a small incision with a scalpel to safely retrieve the quill after it had travelled from the original puncture site.

⚠️ If your pet gets quilled, please DO NOT attempt to remove the quills at home.
Porcupine quills break very easily and can continue migrating through the body, potentially causing serious complications involving the eyes, chest, lungs, heart, joints, and other tissues.

Quill removal should be performed under sedation by a veterinary team to maximize the chances of safely and completely removing all quills while minimizing pain and complications.

If your pet has encountered a porcupine, contact your veterinarian or emergency clinic as soon as possible.

It’s coming up on our busiest time of the year and we want to remind everyone of our how our triage system works ⤵️ Emergency hospitals can be incredibly busy, especially during spring & summer. While it may feel like you’ve been waiting a long time, please know that our team is working tirelessly to care for each patient as quickly and compassionately as possible.

We triage cases based on urgency, which means pets in life-threatening situations are treated first. Sometimes, this means that others may need to wait while we help a family say goodbye to their beloved companion.

We understand how stressful it is to have a sick or injured pet, and we want you to know that your concerns matter. When it’s your turn, your pet will receive the same focused and compassionate care.

Please remember to be kind and respectful to our staff - they are here because they truly care and are doing their very best, often under extremely difficult circumstances. Thank you again for your patience, empathy and support. 🩵🐾

Everyone meet Rowdy! This handsome boy saw us last week for a scope and Dr. Suttie was able to retrieve some pretty interesting things. Fortunately, we were able to retrieve all the objects and Rowdy went home later that day! Can you take a guess what it could be based on the X-rays?? Keep swiping to find out 🐾🩵
