🌾 SiD‑Style Post — The Weight of a Rare Breed in My Hands

Every time someone stops me on the street to meet Perzsi and Uzziah, I’m reminded of something most people don’t know:

Briards are one of the rarest heritage working breeds in the world.

In Canada, there are fewer than 50 in a country of almost 40 million people.

In the United States, there are fewer than 1,000.

Across all of Europe — the birthplace of the breed — only a few thousand remain.

When you add it all together, the global Briard population sits somewhere around 3,000–4,500 dogs total. That’s it.

On the entire planet.

There are more giant pandas than Briards. More tigers. More Ferraris. And don't get me started on the BILLION dollar "doodledog" industry!

And somehow, by grace or destiny and clearly something larger than me and divinely orchestrated, I get to be part of preserving this extraordinary lineage.

Every time I look at my boys — their intelligence, their heart, their structure, their ancient purpose woven into every movement — I feel the weight of that privilege. This isn’t just “owning a dog.” This is carrying forward a living history. A working heritage. A breed that has guarded flocks, families, and farms for centuries.

And now, with Hezekiah Lael joining us from Austria — a puppy whose grandmother and lineage are being recognized at the highest levels in Europe — I feel that responsibility even more deeply. His arrival marks the beginning of something beautiful:

the continuation of an exceptional European breeding program into Canada and the USA.

To be trusted with this role is an honour I don’t take lightly.

And here’s the part that makes me smile:

My love for this rare heritage breed is what opened the door to everything else I’m building. Learning how endangered Briards truly are led me to start researching other rare heritage breeds — and I was stunned by how many incredible working breeds I had never even heard of. That curiosity became a daily ritual, and that ritual became the Heritage LIFE Collective daily feature.

From there, the ecosystem grew — naturally, organically, the way constellations form.

The Legacy of Lazarus Lael - Sanctuary on Wheels

All of it connected, all of it rooted in lineage, stewardship, and love.

As Sterling said to me yesterday, “Muma… I just can’t keep track of all the things you come up with.”

And I laughed, because she’s right.

I don’t operate in straight lines. I operate as an ecosystem — one idea leading to the next, each one coexisting, each one feeding the others, each one part of a larger constellation.

Preservation isn’t about numbers.
It’s about devotion.
It’s about integrity.
It’s about protecting what is rare, ancient, and irreplaceable.

And I am so grateful — truly, deeply grateful — to be part of this story. This has been Reid's dream since he was a little boy, Tail of Lael Briards - Alberta, Canada.

🌻PINNED POST — Tail of Lael Briards

Home of the Z‑Lineage

Welcome to Tail of Lael Briards — the lineage home of Lazarus Lael, Perzsi Lael, Uzziah Lael, Hezekiah Lael, and the generations that will follow.

This page exists to honor the Z‑Lineage — a lineage rooted in balance, purpose, structure, temperament, and heart.

🌿 Where the lineage began

The story starts with Lazarus Lael, my fourth Briard but the first I trained as my service dog. He was the dog who taught me what true partnership feels like — steady, intuitive, attuned. When Perzsi joined us, Lazarus helped me train him too, and I learned something essential:

A balanced, trained dog can teach another dog in ways humans simply cannot.

Lazarus and Perzsi were both neutered, so their legacy lives through their work, not their genetics. They came from difficult beginnings, and it took years of devotion to help them find their footing. Lazarus eventually became beautifully socially fluid; Perzsi always carried a bit of social awkwardness despite his enormous heart.

🌿 The European chapter — Sabine

Everything changed when Uzziah arrived — my first intact male and my first Briard from Sabine at Briards Taquine des Étoiles in Belgium.
Receiving a well‑balanced, socially fluent, deeply grounded puppy from a breeder who understands early development opened an entirely new world for me. Uzziah showed me what is possible when a dog begins life with clarity, confidence, and proper socialization.

🌿 The Austrian chapter — Laura

Then came Hezekiah, from Laura at Pride & Precious Briards in Austria.
Laura has gone above and beyond — not only giving him love and early structure, but also providing the specific exposures and experiences he needs as a Service Dog in Training. She has ensured he grows confident, balanced, secure, and socially fluid.

Hezekiah will come home to Calgary, Alberta, where he will join my pack as:

a show dog

a future stud for the Z‑Lineage

a service dog

and a working partner in The Legacy of Lazarus Lael — Sanctuary on Wheels, supporting end‑of‑life, dementia/Alzheimer’s, ALS, and therapeutic companion work alongside Perzsi and Uzziah.

🌿 The Canadian chapter — Rebecca

This lineage also carries the imprint of friendship and fate.

Years ago, when I had just moved to Edmonton with Reid and Lazarus, a woman stopped me in a store — she recognized the breed instantly because her friend had just gotten her first Briard, Nellie. Since Briards are so rare that most people will never see one in their lifetime, we get pretty excited when we meet “one of our own.”

She connected me with her friend — Rebecca Hartman, who would go on to create Oh My Darling Briards in Alberta, importing four beautiful Briards from Europe for showing and breeding.

Rebecca and I became friends.
Our dogs became friends.
And our paths kept weaving together.

One day she contacted me, excited about a puppy in Austria whose lineage she was deeply interested in. She asked if I might want to join her in the world of showing and breeding — to collaborate, to build something together.

I took one look at that little boy and knew in my heart:
This was my next great love.
This was Hezekiah.
This was the dog God sent.

And the rest is history.

🌿 The Z‑Lineage

Together, Uzziah and Hezekiah will carry forward the Z‑Lineage — shaped by:

Lazarus’s service‑dog legacy

Perzsi’s heart

Sabine’s brilliance in Belgium

Laura’s devotion in Austria

Rebecca’s friendship and shared vision in Canada

and the work we will continue to do through Tail of Lael Briards

This page will be:

a living archive of the Z‑Lineage

a place to honor the dogs who built it

a record of temperament, structure, purpose, and story

a home for photos, updates, reflections, and lineage milestones

a space for those who love Briards, working dogs, and heritage lines

If you’re here, you’re part of the story now.

Welcome to Tail of Lael Briards. Welcome to the lineage.
