‼️Ticks & Dogs ‼️– Protect Your Pets This Season
Siksika Animal Services is reminding all community members to stay alert for ticks as the weather warms.
Ticks are active in grassy areas, brush, coulees, and along riverbanks — all common places our dogs explore.
🐾 What dog owners should do
Check your dog daily, especially after walks or time outdoors
(ears, neck, armpits, belly, tail, between toes)
Use veterinarian‑approved tick prevention
(chewables, topical treatments, or tick collars)
Keep yards trimmed to reduce tick habitat
Avoid tall grass and heavy brush when possible
Shower and check yourself after outdoor activities — ticks can transfer from pets to people
🐾 If you find a tick
Remove it slowly and carefully with tweezers, pulling straight out
Do not twist, burn, or apply substances
Save the tick in a sealed bag or container for identification
Monitor your dog for signs of illness (lethargy, fever, lameness, loss of appetite)
- When to seek veterinary care
If the tick was attached for a long time
If your dog shows any signs of illness
If you’re unsure whether the tick was fully removed
