Can you see the issue 👀 This eye has what is commonly known as “Cherry eye” 🍒 You can see that there is a fleshy prolapse of the 3rd eyelid that causes there to be that noticeable red area on the inner corner of the eye. Cherry eye is not uncommon is smaller dogs but can also be common in breeds like Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs and Boston terriers. The only way to permanently correct this issue is to surgically replace the prolapse and suture the membrane shut. We did a full eye exam to ensure that the rest of the eye is healthy and no other conditions were underlying
1. We tested eye pressures with our Tonopen. This is similar to the puff of air that you receive at the optometrist. This helps to rule out Glaucoma.
2. We also did a Schirmer tear test, where a strip is placed in the eyelid and how soaked the strip becomes in 1 minutes helps to evaluate the patients overall tear production. This helps to rule out dry eye.

Little Midge 🥰

This chonky girl was adopted by our Tech Assistant, Kieran! She is 8 years old and was very overweight when she was adopted. Unfortunately she decided to be superwoman and see if she could fly (she couldn’t) and jumped off of a very high bed at home. She present to us the next day non weight bearing on her left hind leg. She got a very thorough exam with Dr Ellie and determined she needed some X-rays done. In her x-rays it was obvious that her tibia (shin bone) is very displaced (pushed forward). On her exam, we were able to push/pull that lower portion of the leg wayyy to much against her femur; meaning that there was instability in her knee joint. The ligament that helps to create stability in the knee is called the Cranial Cruciate Ligament (similar to a ACL in humans) and it is actually very common for larger breed, highly active or overweight pets to damage or tear this ligament. Poor Midge had done just that and was in the following week to fix it! Bigger dogs will get a plate installed to help create stability in their joint but smaller dogs/cats are able to have a wire or suture material strategically placed around the knee to create stability. Her surgery went perfect and in 6-8 weeks she will be a new lady 🥰
