I apologize for the lack of availability of Finch Feast Regular this week! Unprecedented demand and lack of a particular ingredient made it difficult to keep in stock the last couple of weeks.

The good news is we have it back in stock at both stores and shouldn’t have any issues mixing it going forward!

I refused to substitute the ingredients because I believe that people want consistency and quality every single time they purchase seed from us and that is a commitment I will always abide by!

This male arrived yesterday at my home in Hockley. Males will often arrive first to scout out potential nesting sites. The females will follow and if they nest near your property, you should have them visit your feeder all summer.

Well hello there Mr. Rose Breasted Grosbeak..... nice to see you again. This beautiful male was spotted by our very own Caledon Lions Club treasurer David Cunningham. The Northern Cardinal is one of the few bird species where a bonded male and female can often be seen together year-round, making a “cardinal couple” a familiar and beloved sight. The male, bright red with a black facial mask, is strikingly different from the female, whose warm brown plumage is accented with soft red tones on her wings, tail, and crest. Together, they present a beautiful example of how pair bonds work in nature.

Cardinal couples are often monogamous during a breeding season, and many pairs stay together for long periods, sometimes mating for life. They work as a team, with the male often feeding the female during courtship as a sign of bonding and care. During nesting season, the female typically builds the nest and incubates the eggs, while the male guards the territory and brings food. Once the chicks hatch, both parents share the responsibilities of feeding and protecting their young.

Beyond parenting, Northern Cardinals are known for their close companionship. Pairs may forage side by side, call to one another, and defend their territory together. Unlike many birds that migrate, cardinals often remain in the same area through winter, which means couples can often be spotted together even in snowy landscapes. Their loyalty, cooperation, and vivid beauty have made cardinal pairs symbols of devotion, partnership, and enduring love.

RUBY'S ARE ON THE WAY !!!
The first Ruby Throated Hummingbird hit Ontario skies just yesterday!! It's kind of early, but birds are driven by instinct and not by calendars. It's the males that usually arrive first, then the females and juveniles follow. I would say we might be in full swing a bit earlier than expected which is usually around Mother's Day for most people. So if you have feeders and want to get your first glimpse of those little jeweled fliers, I suggest putting them out now in anticipation of hungry boys on their way through.
Remember: nectar is 1 part white cane sugar to 4 parts water.

The snow has melted… and revealed a whole winter's worth of seed! 😖

Totally normal - but now’s the time for a cleanup.

Spring Cleanup Checklist:
✔️ Rake up shells & old seed. You can even use a shop vac for large amounts.
✔️ You could use the opportunity to reseed the area... rain is coming.
✔️ Refresh your feeding space
✔️ Give your feeders some attention. Clean out any old seed and give your feeders a good cleaning using warm water and dish soap.

🧹A quick cleanup helps prevent mold, bacteria, and unwanted pests - keeping your birds safe and your yard fresh.

Want a tidier setup going forward? Try this:
✅️ Switch to our "No Mess Mix" or seeds/nuts with no shells.
✅️ Offer seed logs instead
✅️ Add suet (yes even in the warmer months) ~ zero waste and a great energy source
✅️ Use a tray or catcher under feeders

Cleaner ground = healthier birds and less work for you 👍🏻

Love 'em or hate 'em....
Blackbirds, Grackles, and Starlings can empty a feeder fast - but the good news is there are ways to deter them while still offering food to other birds.

✅️Food choices that help:
• Safflower Seed – although a bit bitter it's still enjoyed by many songbirds but often avoided by blackbirds.
• Peanuts in the shell – Starlings usually can’t crack them, but Bluejays, Woodpeckers and Nuthatches will be happy for the offering.

✅ Feeder options to try:
• Finch feeders – small feeding ports limit access to only the finch-sized birds.
• Caged feeders – allow small birds through while keeping larger birds out.
• Starling-proof suet feeders – caged designs prevent Starlings and Grackles from reaching the suet while smaller birds can still feed.
• Weight-sensitive feeders – can be adjusted so heavier birds can’t access the seed.

A few small changes to what you offer and how you offer it can make a big difference at your feeders 😊
