🐾 **Welcome to the Tails & Trails family!** 🐾

We are SO excited to introduce some of the new faces who have joined us this summer! 💕 We feel incredibly lucky to get to know each of these dogs and their families, and we can’t wait to watch them grow, learn, and build confidence with us.

While we *do* accept new clients, we are very intentional about **when and how** we bring new dogs into our programs.

We cap our numbers because our priority will always be making sure the individual needs of every dog in our care are being met. That means we are not always accepting new clients & dogs. We may also ask for a different starting point or a slower transition based on the individual dog!

Every dog is different. Some may jump right in, while others need more time, structure, individual training, or a gradual introduction before they are ready to fully join the group. 🐶

We believe a successful transition should be happy, safe, and set up for success — not rushed just to fill a spot.

So to all of our new members this summer: **WELCOME!** We are so happy you’re here! 🐾❤️

And to our existing Tails & Trails family, thank you for trusting us with your dogs and allowing us to continue keeping their needs at the heart of everything we do.

Finding your bestie at summer camp is the best! 🤩

Did you know💡:
Both these dogs are intact!

One male. One female.

A lot of people assume this automatically means they can’t safely spend time together—but with the right management, structure, and training, they absolutely can.

Safe experiences don’t happen by chance. They happen through clear communication, appropriate boundaries, careful supervision, and setting both dogs up for success.

That said, every dog is an individual. If this type of environment is too much for a dog, we’ll always be honest about it. Our priority is doing what’s best for each dog, even if that means recommending a different setup that’s better suited to their needs.

We never force dogs into situations they’re not ready for. We set them up for success, advocate for them, and make decisions based on what’s best for their well-being—not what’s most convenient.

Every interaction should be based on the individual dog, not assumptions. 🐾

Tether decompression is one of the most underrated tools in dog training.
Most people see a dog that is pacing, whining, barking, pulling, unable to settle, or constantly looking for something to do and assume they need more exercise, more obedience, or more stimulation.
Sometimes what they actually need is to learn how to simply be.
Tether decompression gives dogs a safe, structured opportunity to process their environment without constantly seeking engagement from us. It teaches emotional regulation, patience, and how to settle themselves rather than relying on humans to fix every feeling they experience.
The stages often look something like this:
🔹 Stage 1: Protest
Whining, barking, pulling against the leash, pacing, spinning, digging, or trying every behaviour they know to get released. This is often where owners feel tempted to stop because it looks uncomfortable.
🔹 Stage 2: Processing
The dog begins observing their surroundings. You’ll notice moments of calm mixed with frustration. They may sit, stand, watch people, sniff the air, or simply start taking information in.
🔹 Stage 3: Acceptance
The emotional intensity starts to decrease. The dog realizes nothing exciting is happening and begins making better choices on their own. You’ll see longer periods of calm and fewer attempts to escape the situation.
🔹 Stage 4: Decompression
This is where the magic happens. Relaxed body language, softer eyes, deep breaths, laying down, resting, or simply watching the world go by. The nervous system begins shifting out of constant arousal.
🔹 Stage 5: Regulation
With repetition, dogs become better at settling faster and handling environmental stressors more effectively. They develop the ability to self-regulate rather than constantly reacting to everything around them.
The goal isn’t to “make them do nothing.”
The goal is to teach them that they are capable of finding calm without constant direction, entertainment, or intervention.
In a world where many dogs are overstimulated every waking moment, learning to settle is a skill—and like any skill, it needs practice.
Sometimes the most productive training session is simply doing nothing.
