In a small fishing village on the northern Norwegian coast, residents have started noticing the same gray cat waiting on the same wooden pier every afternoon, looking out toward the same stretch of water.

He arrives sometime between 3 and 4 in the afternoon, sits at the edge of the boards, and watches the boats coming back in. He does not move for the ones he does not know. When the green-and-white trawler rounds the breakwater, he stands up. The trawler's owner is an older fisherman who has worked this harbor since he was a boy. He pulls a small piece of fish from the morning's catch and the cat eats it on the pier while the man unloads.

A neighbor began photographing the moment last winter. She says the cat is there in the snow, too.
