“How do I know if my tank is seeded with copepods?”

It’s one of our most common customer questions. Here’s what we recommend:

1. Allow about a month after the initial seed.
2. Let a light film of algae develop on the glass.
3. After lights out, use a flashlight to look for tiny white critters darting around.

Seeing plenty on the glass is a good sign of an established population, with more likely tucked away in the rock and sand.

Why leave a little algae on the glass? It provides a grazing surface where copepods feed on algae and other material in the biofilm. They’re doing exactly what you brought them in to do—helping keep your system clean while providing a natural, live food source for your reef’s inhabitants!

We’ve been meaning to capture an example—and during last night’s check, we finally remembered!

Watch the tiny white specks in the video below. Movement is key: plenty of white dots can appear on the glass, so look for that quick, erratic motion. 🔦🦐

Think your reef is busy? Take a closer look at this crowd! 👀🦐

It’s water-change time here at Plankton Plug, and these copepods are keeping us company.

Water quality matters just as much for the tiny animals feeding your reef as it does for the fish and corals living in it. Routine care helps keep their environment stable as cultures grow and waste builds up.

Behind every bottle is ongoing maintenance, close observation, and attention to the little things. Dense cultures deserve dedicated care—and we take pride in putting that work in. 💪🌊

Watch the video—how many can you spot? 😂

Behind every healthy culture is clean, carefully prepared water. 🧪🌊

Today, we’re preparing fresh culture water for routine water changes and upcoming phytoplankton splits. It may not be the flashiest part of the process, but it’s one of the most important.

Consistent water quality helps maintain stable cultures, supports healthy growth and reduces unnecessary stress during harvesting and splitting. Strong products don’t begin at bottling—they begin with careful preparation long before an order is placed.

It’s all part of maintaining the quality and consistency Plankton Plug stands behind.

📍 Scarborough Reefers — we want to hear from you!

Would you be interested in having a central Scarborough pickup location for our live and ?

We’re considering sending a weekly shipment to one convenient location where everyone can place their orders in advance and pick them up. This would eliminate individual shipping costs while giving Scarborough reefers reliable access to fresh, high-quality live products once again.

Would you use this service? Let us know what you think, where you’d prefer the pickup location to be, and any other suggestions you may have.

We’re always looking for better ways to serve the reefing community!
