Amazing information!

I was chatting with a puppy owner this morning about leash training and thought it was worth a post!

This is mostly for puppies just learning to walk on leash, and about building good habits from the start! But also could apply to an adult dog. šŸ˜‰

Loose leash walking is a hard thing for puppies! But pulling on a leash is a very clear way to build reactivity and frustration- so it’s important to work on it!

Take cookies. Reward what you like. But also use moving forward as a reward too.

Don’t walk in straight lines. For real. Circles. Zig zags, random changes of direction. Praise and reward for coming with you. This generally means you need to walk in green spaces and parks versus neighborhoods tho. Walking in a straight line encourages them to pull to ā€œget there.ā€ If they don’t know where we are going they do pay more attention!

Give them a chance to sniff and do dog things. Take a long line with you and when you get to the park let them have some space to do things. Hang out in an area well off the path and give them some space to take their time. But be sure not to allow them to interact with other people
Or dogs as part of their free time. šŸ˜‰

Start your walk with training. Practice some obedience and tricks before you start. High rate of reinforcement too! Don’t be cheap. This little training session will set you and your pup up on teamwork.

Train more than walk. I know. Some of you might like to actually walk. But you’ve got to get in their heads and stay in their heads. Stop and train ever ten minutes or so on your walk- at least!

A reminder that your puppy does not need to say hi to every person or dog they see. In fact letting your on leash dog say hello to everyone is a good way to build bad leash manners and excitement- which turns into reactivity.

Use a tool- a front attachment harness is okay for adult dogs but not puppies. But if your pup is a super strong puller I’d suggest a gentle leader or halti (head halter). It takes some training but does take away the dogs pull.

Depending on the age- puppies can be a bit barky at things- if that happens back up, away from what startled them and then stop and train a bit. If the dog can listen at that point that’s perfect. Let them look at the trigger again, and train some more. Don’t run away, and never try to bribe or lure closer (especially if it’s a person). People watching is a great puppy pastime! Go to a parking lot and hang out. Train, walk a bit. Let the dog see all the things. But no interactions at all. Just you and your puppy!

Choose your location wisely. Start where it’s less busy! Build good habit with success!

Happy Training!

The Alberta veterinary world has a heavy heart this week, and it’s a stark reminder of the incredible emotional weight our local clinics carry. Today, we wanted to take a moment to give a massive, heartfelt shoutout to the entire team at Pioneer Veterinary Services !

To say they are "always there for us" is an understatement.

Dr. Lisa, thank you for being you. We’ve seen you cry and feel our losses right alongside us, and I’ve watched you smile and laugh while getting rare kisses and cuddles from my most standoffish boy. You constantly give 110% of yourself and we would be lost without you.

A huge thank you to the amazing Vet Techs who are kind, knowledgeable, and so incredibly patient with Fen. Seeing how good you are with a dog who is genuinely terrified of the vet means more than I can say. You make the "scary stuff" so much easier for him.

We also want to thank the other vets on staff who are always there to step in with the same level of care and expertise when Dr. Lisa is tied up.

And last but by far not least, the ladies at the front, you are the backbone of the clinic, and your kindness and helpfulness never go unnoticed.

In a profession that gives so much of itself to our furry family members, please know that you are seen and so deeply appreciated. We are so lucky to have you in our corner. šŸ–¤

Happy Monday!
In this shot from yesterday’s scent practice, Freya had just found the hide. But instead of keeping her nose to odor, she threw me a "check-in" look. My sister captured this exact moment, the moment where a training session either levels up or gets messy.

When we talk about "The Sweet Spot", we are balancing three critical factors:
1. Criteria (What exactly am I paying for?)
In scent work, the goal isn't just to find the smell; it’s to indicate it clearly.
The Trap: If I mark (click or "yes!") while Freya is looking at me, I am rewarding the "check-in". Over time, this creates a dog that constantly looks back for help rather than trusting their nose.
The Fix: By waiting for her to re-engage her nose with the hide, I am reinforcing independence and a strong nose hold. I’m telling her: "The money is at the source, not in my pocket".

2. Communication (The Timing of the Mark)
Our mark is a bridge. It tells the dog, "The thing you are doing right this second is what earned the reward."
Early Mark: Rewards the distraction/look.
Late Mark: If she re-engages and then starts to walk away because I took too long, I’ve rewarded the "leave-it" instead of the "find."

3. The Stress Threshold (Building Confidence)
This is the most nuanced part. If we wait too long for the perfect behaviour, a dog can enter "frustration-based stress."
The Danger Zone: If the dog tries, doesn't get rewarded, and we keep waiting, their confidence can shatter. They might start "guessing" (pawing, barking, or quitting) because they feel they’ve failed.
The Goal: We want to push them just enough to think through the problem, but catch them with a reward the second they make the right choice. This builds a dog that loves to problem-solve because they know success is always within reach.

The "Sweet Spot" is the secret sauce for a reliable dog, whether you’re in a trial or just hanging out at a park in Olds. Think about these common moments:
1. The "Half" Sit
The Mistake: Your dog starts to sit, but their bum is hovering a bit off the ground and they are ready to ā€œgo do the thingsā€. If you reward now, you’re rewarding a distracted and incomplete sit.
The Sweet Spot: Wait for that split second where their bum actually touches the ground. Mark that! This is the behaviour you are actually looking to build.
2. The Stay
The Mistake: We often reward the stay just as the dog is starting to "pop" up or lean forward to break. We’re accidentally rewarding the anticipation of leaving, not the act of staying.
The Sweet Spot: Mark and reward while your dog is still "heavy" in their posture—total stillness. If you wait until they are vibrating with excitement to move, you’ve pushed past the sweet spot into stress, and the stay may eventually crumble.

When we find this timing window, we stop training "robots" and start coaching "thinkers." It helps us to build the behaviours we are trying to achieve.

If we mark too early, the dog becomes a Guesser (throwing behaviours at us to see what sticks). If we wait too long, they become Stressed and check out. But when we hit that sweet spot, we build a dog that is Confident because they know exactly how to win the game.
