🌾🐴 What type of hay does your horse eat?

Forage should make up the majority of your horse’s diet, but choosing the right hay involves more than simply deciding between timothy, bermudagrass, or alfalfa. The best option depends on your horse’s body condition, workload, metabolic health, and nutrient requirements.

🌱 Cool-season grasses, such as timothy and orchardgrass, grow best in cooler climates and are common throughout much of the U.S. and Canada.

☀️ Warm-season grasses, such as bermudagrass, thrive in warmer climates and are commonly grown in the southern U.S.

🌿 Legumes, including alfalfa and clover, are generally more nutrient-dense than grass hay, providing higher levels of protein, energy, and calcium. They can be useful for performance horses, growing horses, lactating mares, and hard keepers, and are often fed as part of a grass-hay-based diet.

But hay type alone doesn’t tell you its nutritional value. Plant maturity at harvest, growing conditions, and storage can significantly affect energy, protein, sugar, fiber, and mineral content, even between two bales of the same type of hay.

🧪 A hay analysis is the best way to know exactly what your forage provides and determine whether it matches your horse’s individual needs.
