โš–๏ธ A Quick Note About Our Pet Scale โš–๏ธ๐Ÿพ

You may notice that our scale is set to kilograms (kg) instead of pounds. This is because all veterinary medications, anesthetic drugs, fluid rates, and many medical calculations are performed using kilograms for accuracy and safety.

Even a small change to the unit setting can create serious concerns when calculating proper drug dosages for your pet. For this reason, we kindly ask that clients please do not change the scale from kilograms to pounds.

If you would like to know your petโ€™s weight in pounds, we are always happy to help! ๐Ÿ˜Š
You can also easily convert it at home:

โžก๏ธ Kilograms ร— 2.2 = Pounds

Example:
10 kg ร— 2.2 = 22 lbs

Thank you for helping us keep your pets safe and ensuring accurate medical care for every patient that visits us. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฆท What Happens During a COHAT? ๐Ÿพ

A COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) is much more than โ€œjust a dental cleaningโ€ โ€” itโ€™s an important procedure that helps keep your pet healthy and pain-free! โค๏ธ

Hereโ€™s what happens during a veterinary dental procedure:

๐Ÿถ 1. Pre-Anesthetic Exam & Bloodwork
We perform a full physical exam and recommend bloodwork to help ensure anesthesia is as safe as possible for your pet.

๐Ÿ’ค 2. General Anesthesia
Your pet is placed under anesthesia so we can safely and thoroughly examine and clean every tooth โ€” including below the gumline.

๐Ÿฆท 3. Full Oral Examination
The veterinarian checks for:
โ€ข Broken or loose teeth
โ€ข Infection
โ€ข Gingivitis & periodontal disease
โ€ข Oral masses or abnormalities

๐Ÿ“ธ 4. Dental X-Rays
Many dental problems hide below the gumline. X-rays help us see tooth roots, bone loss, abscesses, and other hidden issues.

โœจ 5. Ultrasonic Scaling & Polishing
Plaque and tartar are removed from above and below the gumline, then the teeth are polished smooth to help slow future buildup.

๐Ÿ˜ท 6. Extractions (If Needed)
If painful or severely diseased teeth are found, they may need to be removed to improve comfort and quality of life.

๐Ÿ’œ 7. Recovery & Pain Management
Your pet is closely monitored as they wake up, and pain medications are provided when needed.

๐Ÿก 8. Home Care Recommendations
Weโ€™ll discuss brushing, dental diets, treats, and products to help maintain a healthy mouth at home.

Healthy mouth = healthier pet! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆ
Dental disease can affect the heart, liver, kidneys, and overall comfort โ€” regular dental care matters more than many people realize!

๐Ÿฆ” Quill Prevention Tips for Pets ๐Ÿพ

Porcupine encounters can happen fast โ€” especially during evening walks, hikes, or backyard adventures. Here are a few ways to help keep your pets safe from painful quills:

โœ… Keep dogs on leash during walks in wooded or brushy areas
โœ… Supervise pets outdoors, especially at dawn, dusk, and nighttime
โœ… Avoid areas where porcupines are commonly seen
โœ… Practice a strong โ€œleave itโ€ command
โœ… Check your yard for porcupine activity if you live in a rural area

โš ๏ธ If your pet gets quilled:
โ€ข Do NOT cut the quills
โ€ข Avoid pulling them out at home if there are many or if they are near the eyes/mouth
โ€ข Contact your veterinary team as soon as possible

Quills can migrate deeper into the body and cause serious complications if not properly removed.

Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors responsibly! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐ŸŒฒ

Big Steve came in for a routine neuter yesterday. He made sure to soak up all the love, and handled the procedure like a champ. One of our tiniest patients with the biggest courage .๐Ÿพ
