I recently groomed my very first Highlander Longhair cat, and I’m officially in love! 😍 Meet this handsome boy! Not only does he look like a mini wildcat with those amazing curled ears and bobtail, but he was also an absolute angel on the table. They are known for being playful, which was evident as he tried to play with the comb, brush and my hands 😁

The Highlander cat originated in the United States during the 1990s and early 2000s. Originally called the Highland Lynx, the name was changed to Higlander to show that they are domestic cats, with no Lynx or wildcat DNA.

I noticed first hand the similarities in temperament to Maincoon's. Like Mainecoons, Highlanders are goofy, extroverted, and highly entertaining. They love to perform tricks, play with toys, and act silly to get attention from humans. Both breeds are dog-like.

A big win for animal welfare in Ontario!

Starting January 1, 2027, declawing cats and ear cropping dogs will officially be against the law in Ontario, except when medically necessary. Although I'm unsure of why either would be medically necessary!

These procedures have long been performed for human convenience and cosmetic reasons, at the expense of the animal's comfort and well-being. It's encouraging to see stronger protections being put in place for our pets.
A positive step forward for cats, dogs, and the people who care about them. ❤️

Docking of tails on dogs did not make the list unfortunately, but I hope we are getting there.

Read on to understand what the real effects are on our pets when we choose to have these procedures done for our own convenience and cosmetic status.

DECLAWING is much more than removing a cat's claws. It involves amputating the last bone of each toe, similar to removing the tip of a human finger at the last knuckle.
Some of the potential downsides include:
Pain and discomfort:
Cats can experience significant pain after surgery, and some develop chronic pain that lasts for years.

Side Effects:
Changes in how they walk
Litter box avoidance
Increased biting
Reduced ability to climb and balance
Behavioral changes - Some cats become more anxious, fearful, or defensive after declawing.
Instead, there are better ways, like:
Providing scratching posts and pads
Regular nail trims
Training and redirecting scratching behavior
Many veterinarians, animal welfare organizations, and cat behaviour experts oppose routine declawing because of the physical and behavioural risks associated with the procedure. Although, I am told this can still be done locally in our area.

I have been asked several times to apply soft nails caps to cat's claws, which I won't do because of the risks as well as the stress and confusion for the cat.

EAR CROPPING is a cosmetic surgery that removes part of a dog's ear flap and then requires the ears to be taped or "posted" for weeks or months while they heal into an upright position. (we saw this often with German Pinscher's)
There are several side effects, and sometimes repeated care is needed to stave off bleeding and infection. Lets not forget that dogs use their ears, along with their tails and body posture, to communicate with other dogs and people, so altering their ears may affect some aspects of communication.
Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association, oppose routine ear cropping when it is not medically necessary.

The Importance of Eye Care in Persian Cats

All you really need to help keep your Persian’s eyes clean is a paper towel, napkin, or cotton makeup pad dampened with warm water.

Those beautiful big eyes are one of the things people love most about Persian cats, but they also need regular care. Because of their flat facial structure, many Persians experience excessive tearing, which can lead to staining, buildup, irritation, and even skin infections if the area around the eyes isn’t kept clean.
Gently wiping the eye area daily helps remove tears and debris before they harden into crusts. It also allows you to notice early signs of irritation, redness, swelling, or infection.

I personally use a paper towel dampened with warm water to gently clean around the eyes - it's important to gently clean down into the little facial folds on either side of the nose where tears and debris tend to collect. Buildup in those areas temain damp, and can become uncomfortable, and may lead to irritation if left too long.
Always be gentle, and use a clean section for each eye.

Keeping the fur around the eyes clean and dry is not just about appearance...it’s an important part of their comfort and health. Those little daily care routines can make a big difference for these sweet flat-faced kitties ❤️

These pictures of my little girl Petunia, a Persian tabby, are just too cute not to share 💞
She’s the sweetest little thing… a tiny ball of fur with four legs and the cutest face. Honestly, she often reminds me of The Gruffalo. (a childrens book) 😂💕
She’s also like The Little Engine That Could - small, mighty, and determined. Petunia always knows exactly what she wants.
She doesn’t really like being held much. In that way, she reminds me of my Maine C**n, Biggles. He always wanted to be close, just not necessarily held. He would lie down as close as possible beside you and gently stretch one paw onto your lap or hand. ❤️
When Petunia was spayed, though, she suddenly became the cuddliest little cat imaginable. She couldn’t get enough “lovins,” and we absolutely lapped it up. I remember thinking, “Finally… a lap cat!” 😂 But no - that phase passed, and she’s gone right back to her independent little self.
At this point, I’m starting to think maybe I need to get her spayed every few months. 😅🤣😂

My buddy Lord Winston 😉 not his real name 😉 has been coming to me since he was just a tiny kitten. Now he’s grown into the biggest Persian I groom, and somehow also the most judgmental; well, there is one other!
Over the years, I’ve completely fallen in love with this giant fluffy king and all of his dramatic attitude. Lord Winston, however, has made it very clear that while he accepts my services, he does not necessarily approve of them.
Every groom is met with offended stares, and the expression of a cat who feels he deserves legal representation. Occasionally, he forgets to maintain his attitude and simply lies there enjoying the feel of the comb moving through his fur.
Still, I look forward to every visit with him. Watching him grow from kitten fluff into a majestic lion-sized floof has been such a privilege.
I adore him.
Unfortunately… he merely tolerates me. 😂

This sweet girl was back for her groom today. She’s such a sweetheart... and when we were all done, she just hung around watching me while I cleaned up. She was in no rush at all to head back into her carrier 🩷🩷🩷

WHEN A HAIRBALL BECOMES AN EMERGENCY

A little education for cat owners, because two of my clients’ cats recently needed emergency surgery for intestinal blockages caused by fur accumulation.

This brought back a scary memory of my own.

A few years ago, I rushed my Maine C**n, Biggles, to the emergency vet at 1:00 a.m.

He was coughing and trying desperately to bring up a hairball, but he couldn’t dislodge it. He was essentially choking, and I felt it was an emergency situation.

Under veterinary supervision, he was finally able to bring it up. Two hours later we were back home, and thankfully Biggles was completely fine.

That frightening experience cost $749, and he was one of the lucky ones.

People often ask: If cats are always swallowing fur, why is it sometimes dangerous?

Here’s why:

Cats groom themselves constantly, and their rough tongues pull loose fur into their mouths. Fur is made of keratin (the same material as our hair and nails), and it cannot be digested.

Normally, small amounts pass safely through the digestive tract and come out in the stool.

Sometimes fur collects in the stomach and forms a hairball. When this happens, cats cough, gag, or retch because their body is trying to bring it back up.

The problem happens when too much fur is swallowed, or when digestion is moving more slowly than normal.

Because fur cannot be broken down, it can compact into a dense mass. If that mass gets stuck in the digestive tract, it can create a blockage that prevents food and fluids from passing - a true medical emergency that often requires surgery.

The good news is there are ways to help.

Along with regular brushing and coat maintenance, there are hairball gels, lubricants, and specialized treats designed to help fur slide more easily through the digestive tract so it can pass naturally instead of building up.

For my own cats, I use Therabites Hairball & Stool treats, and they’ve worked well for us. There are lots of good options out there, though, and every cat is different.

Ask your vet what they recommend for your cat. You can also find hairball support products at most pet stores, sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find one your cat actually likes.

Breeds more prone to heavy shedding and fur accumulation include:

• Maine C**ns• Persians• Ragdolls• Siberians• Himalayans• Norwegian Forest Cats• British Longhairs• Domestic long-haired cats• Dense-coated short-haired cats like some British Shorthairs and Exotic Shorthairs

Other risk factors include:

• Overgrooming from stress, allergies, or pain• Senior age and slower digestion• Poor hydration

Warning signs that need veterinary attention:

⚠️ Repeated vomiting or retching⚠️ Trying to cough something up but nothing comes out⚠️ Not eating⚠️ Lethargy⚠️ Hiding or acting painful⚠️ Constipation or straining⚠️ A swollen or tender abdomen

Hairballs may seem normal, but frequent hairballs often mean your cat is swallowing more fur than their body can comfortably handle.

A little prevention - regular brushing is most important, along with good hydration, and hairball support when needed. This can help avoid a very scary (and expensive) emergency.

Good Hydration comes from fresh water daily, and feeding canned food, not just kibble.

A reminder: Place the water away from their food bowl to encourage more drinking.

Our cats depend on us to notice when something isn’t right. 💛

SECOND CHANCES - LUNA'S STORY 💞
Looking at the photos below, many of you will remember Luna as she was when she was first rescued and came to me for grooming… and how far she has come since then.
When I reached out for help, your generosity made it possible to raise the funds needed for Luna to have all of her teeth removed. She still lives with stomatitis, but occasional steroid injections are helping to keep it well managed. We’re hopeful that, over time, these treatments will be needed less and less - perhaps not at all.
When I posted looking for a foster home, several wonderful people reached out. In the happiest of endings, her foster mom fell in love with her and decided to make it forever.
Luna is the sweetest, most loving girl. She turned out to be older than we first thought, but aside from her stomatitis, she’s in wonderful shape and thriving in a home filled with comfort, kindness, and love.
We still make occasional trips to her vet in Cobourg for her steroid injections, so she continues to be closely monitored and very well cared for.

It truly takes a village.
A heartfelt thank you to Lana the Animal Nanny for reaching out to me about her condition and for catching Luna when she needed help most. Thank you to GiGi’s Cat Rescue Quinte for allowing us to get Luna the care she needed through the veterinary support they use in their rescue efforts. And thank you to Kat for always caring for and loving Luna.
To everyone who donated, shared, reached out, and helped give Luna this second chance - you changed her life in the most meaningful way.
Luna may not know all your names, but she is living proof of your kindness every single day. 💞
