Look at him!! How is he still single?!?!

Monty is about 11 months now and he’s learning some awesome skills to make him easier to live with. He’s still a willful personality but he’s easy to manage now. He’s a very fun and playful guy, still has a lot of puppy left in him but he’s learning a much needed “off switch”. I’ve been able to work extended place commands with distractions for as long as an hour. Without the use of remote collar, back tie or continuous food reinforcement. That’s awesome for a dog this young. I’m 38 and I can’t even sit still that long without a snack 🤷‍♀️. He’s looking for a home that’s committed to putting in the work. He comes with all the training tools he needs to be successful. He also comes with a lesson and continued support from me. Monty is available through

Monty is available for the right foster to adopt home through . He’s a really fun, happy and playful puppy but he’s also very pushy and willful so he can’t afford to go into a home where he gets an opportunity to manipulate his environment. He’s got an ego, most teenagers do, we gotta keep that ego in check, he’s a dream to be around when you keep his ego in check. He’s a nightmare when you don’t. I’ve added some valuable things to his routine that are really making a difference to how pleasant he is to be around and I’ll be sending him with a lesson and continued support to make sure there’s consistency in his aftercare and subsequent success. We’re working on place because he needs impulse control badly. He’s doing great for a dog that used to run around the house from one door to the next and move his crate around the room so he could pull things into his crate to destroy.

Slow down, think for a second, pause, give me some focus. That’s how you get this food. Monty won’t benefit from this exercise if I help him. He needs to learn on his own. We’re still in the testing phase. He has a general idea of how to get the food but he wants to see if he can steal it or make me drop it. This exercise is often as frustrating for humans as it is for dogs but the result is well worth it. I don’t have to compete with distractions. Monty will start thinking instead of reacting. This is a skill that nearly every dog I get in for training can benefit from. Think instead of react. That pause allows us humans to intervene in situations that may lead to unwanted behaviour. That pause is essential.

This beautiful lady is Rosie. She came here after getting into a couple fights with family dogs. Most of the time she is good with them, but there were a few incidents that left her family confused and scared because hey didn’t know how to prevent it from happening.

Rosie is also an insecure dog, she meets new situations and new people with hesitation.

Believe it or not, these issues are related. Rosies fights have been triggered by resources (people, food, the couch) and excitement. Rosie doesn’t feel like she has much control in her life and of her life. So, when she can control something, she will. And if anything threatens the things she is able to control, she will fight over it.

I’ll be working on muzzle conditioning as a precaution. I’m gonna show her how good it feels to put her faith in people. And I’m gonna take the responsibility of determining what is threat vs non threat, away from her.

She will need to be managed. She will need to be advocated for. But her owners are committed to doing what they need to for her

Let’s talk adolescence.

Adolescence in dogs is a thing and it can be fruuuustrating. Dogs suddenly develop selective hearing, sometimes act like they’re completely deaf, they push, repeatedly. It’s going to feel like they have forgotten all that you have taught them and they are gonna start acting like they’re going through teenage rebellion (cause they are). But it’s temporary and with consistency and patience you will get through it.

This is Monty, he came here after a bite incident (redirect while very stimulated) because his pushy behaviour continued to escalate at an exponential rate afterwards. He’s strong, he’s confident, he’s pushy, and he’s been able to bully a lot of people in a short period of time so he’s gotten pretty cocky too.

If the behaviour he developed in adolescence was left unchecked he would have turned into a bit of a nightmare to handle in no time. But didn’t hesitate to step in and send him to training to build the foundation he needs to be manageable moving forward.

The great news with Monty is, once you convince him you can’t be bullied, he doesn’t keep pushing you and that means he’s got a bright future when he finds his forever home. He will come with the tools he needs to succeed, a private session from me and unlimited support

I love flexi leashes.

Probably not expecting me to say that. Most people talk about how much they hate them. Well, for the ways most people use them they are inappropriate but, I love using them when I’m building engagement. This is Murphy. Murphy is all about Murphy. I’ve already done engagement with no distractions, but I’m upping the ante and now I’m asking for engagement with distractions.

The flexi gives him the chance to do what he wants, it gives me a chance to see what he’s more interested in, and when he offers me some behaviour and focus, he gets some food. And this is how he eats right now. Soon enough, he’s gonna prefer offering me attention when given the choice to explore. Then I will have some true engagement.

Let’s talk conflict...

This is Murphy, Murphy has lived a life of misunderstandings. A misunderstanding with previous handlers for the need for consistent boundaries. A misunderstanding of where he belongs in the hierarchy with people (it’s not on top as he’d have you believe). A misunderstanding in effective and fair communication.

What that’s created is a dog that feels entitled to do what he wants, he feels entitled to control people using aggression and if humans try to follow through on something they ask, he’s got no problem turning that into a fight.

Because he is big, 110lbs big, he’s become a pretty proficient manipulator. It’s not often you find an experienced enough handler who won’t back down to a dog like this, and is able to correct and redirect appropriately to allow for a learning situation. Although i am a professional and therefore experienced handler, I don’t want to have to ‘fight him’ to get him to do what is appropriate so instead I have to work with him and avoid conflict. This doesn’t mean I will compromise with him, it means when he doesn’t want do something (aka puts up a fight), instead of going after him, overpowering him or forcing him to follow through, I will use patience to get him to comply. I want to wait for HIM to make the right choice, and reward when he does so. Basically, I will work to out-stubborn him. And trust me, I’m very stubborn and have a lot of patience. It’s also important to note that I don’t work with bribes with a cocky dog like him, instead I’ll bump up the means of communication when he is doing the unwanted behaviour and I’ll wait (days if needed!) to get him to choose the correct move.

Ever wonder what the process of teaching ‘place’ looks like? Here you go.

Trainers often show a finished product but how do you know when you’re on the right track if you don’t see the journey too?

This is condensed from a 12 minute video, I’m getting a feel for the best way to communicate with Noc, I try leash, food, spatial pressure and different types of blocks and directional communication to get him to go to the bed and stay on the bed. This is Nocs first session but he really makes me look good and makes this look easy, not all dogs pickup this fast so don’t get discouraged if your journey doesn’t look like this.

Noc is looking for a foster to adopt through Save Our Scruff

Genetic fulfillment. What does that even mean?

I often mention the need for genetic fulfillment in a training program, especially when discussing working dogs, or dogs that display uncontrollable behaviour. But what does it mean? Most people exercise their dog’s with a walk, play time with other dogs, and/or fetch. But there are endless ways to exercise (fulfill) your dog, and when we consider the plethora of things that motivate dogs based on their genetics, we can offer more satisfying “genetic fulfillment” when those things are considered.

We ask dogs to make compromises and ignore their desires so they can fit into our lifestyle. “Ignore the garbage can” “don’t chase that cat” “walk next to me at my pace” “don’t pull the leash” “don’t bark when you’re excited” “wait till I tell you before you eat” “hold your p*e until we get outside”. When we think about it, they sacrifice a lot for our convenience. Some dogs struggle more than others to ignore their impulses because those impulses are incredibly strong due to genetics. Other dogs just haven’t been taught the right way to control those impulses.

I’m of the opinion that all dogs should have the opportunity to get in touch with their genetic desires in a safe controlled way on a regular basis. So, how do we do that? If you’re not sure what your dog likes to do, let them show you. Sometimes considering things like dog breed can help narrow things down. Scent hounds like to track, sight hounds like to chase, terriers like to .. terrorize.

Which brings me to Noc. Noc came to training just over a week ago. He was described as friendly but wild. Unmanageable inside and wouldn’t settle on his own. Noc is a Malinois, or is at least a dog wearing Malinois clothes, which often means high prey drive, a desire to mouth/ bite toys and lots of energy. Because I have extensive experience with the breed, owning, breeding and training, I was confident Noc would be easy for me to fulfil.

This video is heartwarming, although Noc showed no significant interest in playing the game, he did show his soft side, his affectionate side and how easily he trusts new people. A special thanks to Grassroots K9 for letting us come over and Michael Nezbeth for testing the sweet old dude. We will switch gears with Noc and work on some food games since he prefers food to play.

Noc will be available for a foster to adopt after the training period. Whoever gets approved to foster to adopt Noc will work one on one with me to learn his training plan and the best ways to keep Noc fulfilled. If you’re interested in being part of Nocs future reach out to Save Our Scruff

If you’re interested in incorporating meaningful structured exercises for your own dogs, reach out to me

I don’t often get a chance to do before and after videos of dogs I work with.

Let me explain, most of the dog’s I work with display aggression because they are insecure, don’t feel safe, don’t trust me yet etc. This means that I need to antagonize a dog to make them feel insecure so I can record their reaction for a before video. My main focus with dogs like that is to build trust and earn respect, it’s not beneficial to my training plan to antagonize dogs.

Noc came here from Save Our Scruff with out of control behaviour and poor manners. He’s not showing this behaviour because he’s scared, he’s just showing this behaviour cause nobody taught him differently. So Noc will be with me for a few weeks while I teach him some manners and some skills to settle down. I’m excited to be able to show this guys progress

How does your dog workout?

Kitty used to enjoy playing fetch but after an X-ray confirmed my suspicions that she had suffered a hip injury years ago I had to be more cautious of the type of exercise she did. Since fetch involves running after the ball and turning suddenly, there were times she’d come back limping a little because that turn puts a lot of stress on her joints. Over the last year I’ve started doing most of her exercise on this slat mill. It’s propelled by the dog, they run as fast or slow as they want, much faster than I can run. But the best part of this, no stopping to change directions suddenly like with fetch so this is the ideal exercise for her. She absolutely loves this tool, I’ve incorporated some obedience into the running so I can tell her to “wait” and she will stop. She will stand still until I give her the release command to run. Great for intense, explosive dogs. But as important as physical exercise is, teaching dogs how to chill is just as important for a good balance. So I follow this exercise with structured down time.
