Canada is on track to experience one of the hottest years on record in 2026, according to forecasts from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Temperatures this summer could rival the record-breaking heat waves of 2023 and 2025, with global temperatures expected to remain 1.35–1.53°C above pre-industrial levels. That would make it the 13th straight year the planet has crossed the 1°C threshold.

Officials also warn that 2026–2030 could become Canada’s hottest five-year period ever recorded. In 2024 alone, extreme heat broke 51 daily records across the country, with many cities seeing record numbers of days above 30°C.

Data shows last year’s June heat wave was made up to 10x more likely due to human-caused climate change, and projections from the Canadian Climate Institute suggest many Canadian cities could see four times as many 30°C+ days later this century.

The heat isn’t a one-off — it’s becoming the new normal.
