He may not look like much to most people, but for one person, he’s absolutely everything…
A year ago, I had 2 litters (by sisters)of my therapy fuzzy holland lops. And while none of my clients were looking for those specific colours or genders at the time, I had two therapy grade ones that needed not good but great homes. Both of which found them. Tragically, within a month and 3 days of adopting one of the two therapy boys, the one client had a terrible accident happen, and she lost him suddenly on Christmas Day. She absolutely loved this boy with every fibre of her being. And when he passed away, she was so lost and so hard on herself.
She reached out to tell me the news, expecting me to hate her while still apologizing, but I couldn’t. Instead, I felt so much love, not just love that she felt for him, but enough love to come tell me what had happened, even though she blamed herself… I have so much respect for that. So we talked, and we laughed, and we cried about all the little joys, her baby had brought her in such a short amount of time—
But something in my heart told me that this wasn’t the end for her. And as crazy as it sounds, something just kept telling me, he wanted to come back to her.
So we sat down and devised a plan, that I would get her as close to him as I could, IF not him again. I tried for what felt like forever and would either lose the litters entirely or the moms just simply wouldn’t take and eventually I wound up losing his dam. So we sat back down to start another plan. We decided to use her sister who is over 60% genetically identical to the mom I lost…but still nothing… I felt like giving up, but knew I couldn’t. I felt ashamed and embarrassed that I couldn’t fulfil all the hopes that I myself, had given her. I went so far as to offer the sire in hopes of filling some void for her if I couldn’t get more babies for her.
And then again, it was like I thought came into my head that didn’t originate from me. It told me to try again, try one more time but closer to when he was originally born. Reluctantly, I said this to the client desperately hoping she wouldn’t think I was crazy but also that I wasn’t just doing more damage than good…
So we had another plan this time and I was going stick to it! But I got sick and once again, wasn’t able to fulfil my promises and pair them for the breeding dates. So I was only able to put them in together once and had to just hope for the best. I palpated at two weeks and a half weeks, and couldn’t feel anything….Getting ready to tell my client the last, and final worst news I could possibly have for her, I prepared myself for a heartbreak.
But all the preparation was not needed. All the planning and attempts weren’t necessary. Little man was going to come back to his human again, it just had to be on his terms.
So arriving back into this world 366 days after his first birth here, I would likely to proudly present to you, Oliver, The Second (the client kept Winston as his middle name and renamed his first when she got him, but for confidentiality reasons, I will just put my Rabbitry name for him here).
Everything was worth it in the end and now, I like to think he just wanted to spend one more day in heaven, with his first mommy❤️
