Woofs and Whiskers Pet Care Services This service provides in home pet care services for the Barrie area by a veterinary technician.

Through years as a vet tech in the area, I have discovered a need for more in home support available with an educated background in pet care. It breaks my heart to hear stories of family pets needing new homes due to the inability to care for them. This is particularly true of pets in families with senior or disabled individuals. In many cases, these pets are their soul companion, but due to decreased mobility or declining health, tasks such as changing litter, walking the dog or even standing at the counter to prepare a meal, can be too challenging. If you add the additional complication of an animal requiring medication or treatments, this can often become overwhelming. With no other options, a decision to re-home the pet may be the only option. With my veterinary technician background, I can provide assistance with this daily care as well as assistance recognizing warning signs that require further veterinary support. For my pet sitting clients, I offer the piece of mind that their fur babies will be pampered as much as my own. If a condition arises while they are away, I will make sure to seek the appropriate medical support while ensuring that they are contacted so an informed decision can be made on their pets' care. Dog walks are individually based on the dog's physical abilities and energy requirements to ensure the experience is a safe and enjoyable experience.

This morning we had to say goodbye to our feisty terrier, Ricky. From the first car ride home where he flopped on his back in my arms to his inability to howl and his quirky ability to sleep in the most awkward places, he was the life of the party in our house for the last 12 years. He persevered through a cruciate surgery and recovery requiring more sedation that he probably should have had to beating stomach cancer without any complaints. He didn't know he was sick until the last 48 hours. After losing his vision earlier in the year we suspected there might be something else happening and today he passed away quietly with my snuggles. I miss him already.

Today Ricky had his very last visit to his oncologist for the best reason possible. After 1.5 years of treatment he is done with his cancer treatments. He is showing no symptoms of it having spread and all of his labs look fantastic so we are moving on to the next stage of his senior life managing his arthritis and giving him the best days he has left. He turns 13 this year and we are hoping for many more years now that he has the chance. Thank you so much to the staff at and Dr. Fenora for the best possible care for our old man!

Merida is thoroughly unimpressed. Life with senior dogs . While I knew she had a little lump on her toe (senior retrievers get all sorts of lumps usually fatty lumps), but during the week I was away it grew exponentially nearly doubling in size and she has been licking at it so she has ulcerated it. Unfortunately it has me worried as fast-growing lumps are never good and the only time I've ever seen a lump like that have to be removed unfortunately it means removing the entire toe. It is on one of her weight-bearing toes so that's going to be unfortunate for her. We are currently doing wound care. Soaking in Epsom salts and scrubbing with chlorhexidine. She's on antibiotics and gabapentin and we have feelers out for a surgical consult for at least a biopsy, but possibly the lump removal. Ricky has two more chemo treatments left and insisted on being included in the picture because everything's about him. If it's not one thing it's another.😥

It's that time of year again. Even Meri was grabbing the brush to tell me it was time. Tried to save auntie some work. We did pretty good for round one. I'm sure we'll have to do it again before the spring is here.

Well, it's been a busy month or so. Since Ricky's first trip to the , he has had 3 more trips back. Unfortunately in the ultrasound on the first trip, we found a mass in his stomach, some nodules on his liver and some early evidence of kidney disease. On follow-up trips we did an endoscopy to biopsy the mass and some ultrasound guided aspirates of the nodules in his liver. The mass unfortunately turned out to be cancerous so we took the aspirates to make sure that it had not spread. Yesterday we met with the oncologist to come up with a plan of action. He felt that given the location of the mass and his general overall health that he would be a good candidate to surgically remove the mass and move forward with some chemo and medications afterwards. He went to consult with the surgery team to get scheduling information and quotes and came back to tell me that they had a cancellation yesterday afternoon and they could do the surgery right away. Definitely not the way I thought that trip would go. They were able to get the mass out cleanly, did take a biopsy of the liver just to be safe as well as a couple other points of interest. He was pretty uncomfortable recovering from surgery so they kept a really close eye on him overnight to get on top of his pain. They were able to wean him off the really heavy-duty drugs this morning into the afternoon and he has made the trip home this evening with me. For the second time in his life, the kitchen is set up as his Hospital Ward. The last time being his knee surgery over 5 years ago. He is pretty zonked and miserable, but he's on the good drugs and the incision looks good. He has had a bit to eat this evening but definitely not his normal appetite. Not really expecting that though so not too worried. Now we just let him recover, try to keep him from climbing the counters and we will check back in with his team in a couple of weeks to make plans going forward.

Ricky was a little sleepy after his ultrasound at . The staff were amazing and were so thorough in our attempt to find some answers. Not the results we were expecting unfortunately and he gets to go back in a couple of weeks for more testing. He's a trooper though and is back to his normal plucky self today. Thank you so much to my clients for their flexibility and allowing me to get him down there on such short notice. You are all the very best! ❤️❤️❤️

Merida and I are at a local referral hospital today trying to figure out why my retriever doesn't want to eat. She's currently enjoying her sedation after her ultrasound, but we haven't been able to find anything yet. So frustrating. 🤔😮‍💨
