🍁 Canada Day is almost here! 🍁

While many of us look forward to fireworks, backyard BBQs, and celebrating with friends and family, our pets may have a very different opinion about the festivities.

For some dogs and cats, fireworks can be a source of significant fear and anxiety. The loud, unpredictable noises can lead to shaking, hiding, pacing, vocalizing, attempts to escape, and other signs of stress.

If your pet has struggled with fireworks in the past, now is the time to start planning ahead. Don't wait until the evening of July 1st! Behavioral medications and other anxiety-management options are often most effective when discussed and arranged in advance.

Our team is happy to help determine what options may be appropriate for your pet, whether that's medication, environmental management, or a combination of strategies to help them feel more comfortable.

A little preparation now can help make Canada Day safer, calmer, and more enjoyable for everyone, including your four-legged family members. ❤️🐾

Give us a call if you'd like to discuss your pet's fireworks anxiety before the holiday arrives!

🍁 Canada Day Closure Reminder 🍁

Mapleview Animal Clinic will be closed on Wednesday, July 1st as our team celebrates Canada Day with family and friends.

To help ensure your pet has everything they need over the holiday, please place any food and medication orders by the end of the day on June 25th.

🐾 Food orders
🐾 Regular medications
🐾 Prescription diets

Please note that some compounded medications may require additional preparation and shipping time. While we will do our best to have these orders arrive before the holiday, some may not be available until shortly after our closure.

If your pet is running low on food or medication, we encourage you to order early to avoid any interruptions.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Canada Day! ❤️🍁🐶🐱

✨ TEAM MEMBER TUESDAY ✨

This week we’re introducing the wonderful Grace! 🩺🐾

From a very young age, Grace knew animals were where her heart was ❤️🐶 She spent several years horseback riding, which gave her the opportunity to work closely with animals and helped confirm that animal care was exactly where she was meant to be.

Grace is deeply passionate about advocating for animals and feels incredibly grateful to be able to help give them a voice while supporting both pets and their families during important moments 💙

Grace attended the Veterinary Technician program at Georgian College and completed her final placement right here at Mapleview! During her placement, she quickly showed a strong passion for veterinary medicine, eagerness to learn, and genuine compassion for every patient she met — and we knew we had to keep her as part of the team ✨

She continues to grow her skills every day and brings so much kindness and positivity to the clinic 🐾

Outside of work, Grace loves spending time with friends and family, hanging out with her cats: Hudson, Vamperina, and Poppy 🐱, and enjoying peaceful walks by the water 🌊☀️

We’re so happy to have Grace as part of the Mapleview family! Be sure to say hi if you see her around the clinic 👋🐾

✨ Meet the Breed Monday; This is Elmo! ✨
If goofiness and loyalty had a mascot… it would be the Boxer 🤪💙
These lovable, high-energy dogs are known for their playful personalities, expressive faces, and endless enthusiasm. Originally bred in Germany as working dogs, Boxers are equal parts clown, athlete, and protector.

🧬 Personality & Temperament
Boxers are big-hearted dogs with even bigger personalities.
-Playful, silly, and full of energy
-Loyal and protective of their families
-Great with children
-Can be a bit stubborn but respond well to consistent training
-Thrive on attention and human interaction

They stay puppy-like well into adulthood, so expect lots of zoomies!

🏃‍♂️ Exercise Needs
Boxers have energy to burn!
-1–2 hours of daily exercise
-Loves: running, fetch, tug, and playtime
-Enjoys structured activities and training
-Without proper exercise, can become bored and destructive

👉 Daily activity is key to a well-behaved Boxer.

🧠 Mental Enrichment
They’re not just goofballs—they’re smart too!
-Obedience training and consistency are important
-Puzzle toys and interactive games help keep them engaged
-Socialization from a young age is essential
-Enjoy learning tricks (especially when treats are involved 🍖)

💡 A bored Boxer will absolutely find ways to entertain themselves… and you might not love their ideas

✂️ Grooming Requirements
Low maintenance, but still need routine care.
-Short, smooth coat
-Weekly brushing is usually enough
-Minimal shedding year-round
-Occasional baths as needed
-Regular nail trims, ear cleaning, and dental care

🏥 Health & Care Considerations
Boxers are generally healthy but can be prone to:
-Heart conditions (like cardiomyopathy)
-Certain cancers
-Hip dysplasia
-Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breathing challenges

⚠️ They can be sensitive to heat, so avoid intense exercise in hot weather!

🏡 Ideal Home
Boxers do best with:
✔️ Active families or individuals
✔️ Homes that can provide lots of attention
✔️ Owners committed to training and socialization
🚫 Not ideal for people looking for a low-energy or independent dog

🐶 Fun Fact!
Boxers are known for their signature “kidney bean dance”; a wiggly, full-body happy dance when they’re excited!

Boxers bring energy, laughter, and loyalty into any home, but they do best with owners ready to match their enthusiasm 💪🐾
