✨ TEAM MEMBER TUESDAY ✨

This week we’re celebrating the wonderful Dr. Natalie! 🩺🐾

After earning her veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2014, Dr. Natalie’s veterinary journey took her from Thunder Bay to Orillia before she finally planted roots here in Barrie with her family 💙

Before veterinary school, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Queen’s University — proving she’s been passionate about animals and science for a very long time 🧬✨

Dr. Natalie has a special interest in dentistry 🦷 and is incredibly dedicated to building strong, trusting relationships with pet parents so together they can give their pets the best quality of life possible.

When she’s not at the clinic caring for your furry family members, you can usually find her spending time with her own family — including her Chihuahua Javier 🐶 and her cat Clee 🐱

We’re so lucky to have her as part of our team! If you see Dr. Natalie this week, be sure to say hi! 👋🐾

✨Meet the Breed Monday; This is Gabby!✨
If brains were a breed… they’d be the Border Collie. 🧠⚡
Known as one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world, these dogs are equal parts athlete, problem-solver, and workaholic. Originally bred for herding sheep, Border Collies thrive when they have a job to do, and they will absolutely invent one if you don’t give them one (yes, that can include herding your children, other pets… or even you 😅).

🧬 Personality & Temperament
Border Collies are incredibly loyal, alert, and eager to please, but they are not a “low effort” dog.

-Highly intelligent (they learn commands fast)
-Extremely driven and focused
-Can be sensitive to noise and environment
-Often form strong bonds with one person
-May develop anxiety or unwanted behaviours if under-stimulated

These are dogs that need engagement, not just cuddles on the couch.

🏃‍♂️ Exercise Needs
Think “marathon partner,” not “casual stroller.”

-Minimum 1–2+ hours of exercise daily
-Loves: fetch, frisbee, agility, hiking, herding activities, dock diving sports.
-Benefits from structured activities (not just free play)
-Without proper exercise, they may become destructive or obsessive

👉 A tired Border Collie is a happy Border Collie.

🧠 Mental Enrichment
This is where Border Collies truly shine, and where many owners underestimate their needs.

-Puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and food-dispensing games
-Advanced obedience training & trick work
-Agility, flyball, or herding trials
-Scent work, barn hunt, or hide-and-seek games

💡 Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for this breed.

✂️ Grooming Requirements
Good news: they’re fairly manageable, but still need routine care.

-Border Collies are a double coated breed (smooth and rough varieties)
-Brush/comb a couple times per week (more during shedding seasons)
-Moderate seasonal shedding
-Occasional baths as needed
-Regular nail trims, ear cleaning, and dental care

🏥 Health & Care Considerations
Border Collies are generally healthy but can be prone to:

-Hip dysplasia
-Eye conditions (like Collie Eye Anomaly)
-Epilepsy
-Sensitivity to certain medications (MDR1 gene in some lines)

Regular vet checkups, a balanced diet, and keeping them mentally/physically fulfilled go a long way in keeping them thriving 💙

🏡 Ideal Home
Border Collies do best in homes that can match their energy and intelligence:

✔️ Active individuals or families
✔️ Homes with space to run (or committed to daily activity)
✔️ Owners interested in training, sports, or enrichment
🚫 Not ideal for low-energy households or those wanting a more laid-back companion

🐶 Fun Fact!

A Border Collie named Chaser learned over 1,000 words, making her one of the smartest dogs ever studied!

If you’re considering adding a Border Collie to your family, just remember: they don’t just want to be part of your life, they want to work in it. 💪🐾

✨ TEAM MEMBER TUESDAY ✨

This week we’re featuring one of our amazing RVTs, Jaime! 🩺🐾

Jaime knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals — although her path to veterinary medicine had a delicious little detour first 👩‍🍳✨ She originally completed a Culinary Management program and spent two years working in kitchens before deciding to follow her passion for animal care.

She first completed the veterinary assistant program and then continued on to the veterinary technician program at Sheridan College. After graduating in 2011, Jaime officially achieved her RVT status 🎉

When she’s not at the clinic caring for patients, Jaime loves spending time with her daughter, being out on the water on her Sea-doo or family boat 🚤☀️, and she has a huge passion for martial arts — something she hopes to get back into training for alongside her daughter someday 🥋💪 And of course spoiling and traiing her two Maine C***s: Titan and Orion.

We’re so lucky to have Jaime’s compassion, knowledge, and positive energy as part of our team 💙🐾
