Owner and head trainer Elise would kindly ask that the community take a moment to honour the loss of her coworker and friend, Sgt. Brett Carleton.
A wonderful man and spirit. The loss is felt by many and Nordik K9 extends its sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues.

Odour doesn’t care where you think it should be.

Successful scent detection requires more than teaching a dog to recognize an odour. The handler must understand how scent moves, how the environment changes a search and how their own decisions can help—or interfere with—the dog doing the work.

Join us at Nordik K9 for a full-day workshop covering:

• Odour movement and behaviour
• Search theory
• Environmental influence
• Handler skills and decision-making
• Practical application with your dog

The workshop will be led by two highly experienced operational handlers:

Craig Tourangeau
12 years military
29 years Toronto Police Service
23 years K9
3 years Airport K9

Ashley Hopkins
Over a decade of dog-training experience
7 years training working dogs
6 years as an operational, certified explosive-detection K9 handler

This workshop is designed to give handlers a stronger understanding of what their dog is experiencing during a search and the practical skills required to build a better detection team.

Meet retired Police K9 Radar.

Radar recently retired from a police service here in Ontario. When circumstances prevent a handler from taking their dog home, we open our doors to provide a stable, structured and loving place for dogs like Radar to live out their retirement.

Taking in a retired operational dog isn’t easy, and it isn’t something suited to the everyday home. These dogs come with years of conditioning, powerful working drives and behaviours that don’t simply disappear when the uniform comes off. Strict guidelines and safety measures must always remain in place, and complacency can never be allowed to creep in.

The dogs don’t understand the word “retirement.” They only know the life and work they’ve been trained for. Our job is to help Radar understand that this is simply the next chapter of his life… one with new routines, new expectations and a team committed to giving him what he needs to succeed.

The Nordik K9 team has been doing an incredible job managing Radar, respecting his needs and helping him adjust to this very different life.

The work doesn’t end. It changes.

Welcome to retirement, Radar. You’ve earned it. 🐾

Huskies aren’t stubborn… they were bred to be independent thinkers and make decisions without constant interactions from their handler.

Instead of repeating commands over and over, make yourself more valuable than the environment. Keep training sessions short, reward engagement, and build motivation before asking for obedience.

Remember: If your Husky ignores you, it’s not because it doesn’t understand you… it’s because it has other plans.
