Sarah is a new addition to our RVT team here at Animal Hospital on Bell Farm Road. We've already noticed how dedicated she is to her role here. We feel lucky to have her on board! 🏥

Sarah recently graduated from St Clair College's Veterinary Technician program, which she attended knowing she wanted a career working with animals. She comes to us with experience working as a vet assistant and kennel attendant. 🩺

The correct answer is A: Obesity

Other pets at risk include:

🩺 Brachycephalic breeds, such as bulldogs, boxers, pugs, and Persian cats, are at a higher risk of heat stroke due to having a restricted airway.

☀️ Young puppies and kittens have a higher risk level since they have not yet fully developed their ability to regulate body temperature.

🥼 Some pre-existing health conditions affecting the heart, respiratory system, and kidney function can increase risk.

Grizzly came to see us at the end of May for difficulty walking and dragging her back legs. In this particular case, Grizzly needed more in-depth care than we were able to provide. Sometimes, we see patients who need to be referred to specialists, and this was one of those cases.

The neurology department at Animal Health Partners in Toronto did an MRI on Grizzly to get to the bottom of what was going on. We're very appreciative that Grizzly's humans were so dedicated to her care, and we are glad to report that her recovery is going well! Thankfully, we are nearby to amazing veterinary teams who can help our patients who need more specialized care. 🏥

Ava works with us part-time as one of our kennel staff. She helps with looking after in-patients and with cleaning tasks. Her work ethic is impressive, and we feel blessed to have her on our team. 🐾

Ava joined us as part of her high school co-op program. Since she was such an asset, we hired her when her placement was finished. She has since graduated and will be pursing a career in veterinary medicine. We'll miss her when she goes off to college in the fall! 🩺

Today is - are your pets included in your family's emergency plans? Here are some suggestions to keep your fur kids safe:

🔥 Put stickers or signs on entryways indicating how many pets are in the home so emergency personnel are aware.

🔥 When you are not home, keep pets near exits so it is easy for emergency personnel to get to them.

🔥 When you are home, keep leashes and carriers in places that are easily accessible in case of emergency.

🔥 Keep microchip information up to date in case pets get loose during evacuation.

🔥 Prevent fires by keeping pets away from candles, stovetops, electrical cords, and other potential hazards.

All jokes aside, we love our kennel staff, all of whom work here part-time while still in high school. We also love our co-op students. It’s always nice to see young people eager to learn more skills, and we feel lucky to be on their path to becoming adults with a career in veterinary medicine. (Even if they think our staff are ancient relics.) 🏥🩺
