A little throwback to Open Farm Days ♡

Around that time, I had the opportunity to chat with Carlie Sanderson from Farm Press Media about Key 13 Horsemanship, our philosophy, our vision and the way we approach training and working with horses.

It was pretty special to see our story and the ideas behind Key 13 put into words and shared beyond our little corner of Alberta.

⭐GUS ⭐2017 Grade Quarter Horse Mare | 15 HH

Gus is a well-broke, versatile mare with a lot of experience under her belt. She is smooth and responsive to ride, with a big motor, a good brain and a genuine go-to-work attitude. At the same time, she is a steady, calm and reliable ride that gives her rider confidence.

Recently tuned up, her buttons are right there when you ask — good stop, rollback, back-up, side pass, moves off your leg and transitions smoothly between maneuvers.

Gus has real working cattle experience, including approximately two years checking and sorting cattle on pasture. She has worked the flag, the roping dummy, done turnback work and sorted and moved cattle between pens. She also was started on the barrels patern and poles.

Versatile and experienced, Gus would excel in gymkhana or cow work and has the motor, responsiveness and work ethic to make a great step-up horse for a confident youth or adult.

She has been hauled to events and has proven herself in busy, high-pressure environments, staying focused on her rider and her job. She has also packed beginners quietly around the arena, offering a steady and confidence-building ride.

Gus has solid ground manners. She is easy to catch, stands tied, saddles and bridles well, is good with her feet, and loads and hauls well.

UTD on feet, vaccinations and deworming.

🌹Rosa🌹

Rosa is an approximately 5-year-old, 15hh grade Quarter Horse mare. She is a gentle, sweet and personable mare who is looking for her next person.

Rosa is easy to catch,lead well, is a quick learner and she is a smooth mover with more go than who. She has the speed and energy when you ask for it, while keeping a good head and coming back down quickly.

Rosa has been handle daily over the last 3 months and completed one month of foundation training wich includes:

• Lunging on a line and at liberty
• Vocal cues, including “whoa”
• Exposure to tarps, obstacles and different objects
• Wears a saddle pad and surcingle
• Ground driving with two lines
• Easy to catch, leads well and stands tied
• Can be groomed and handled all over
• Feet handled and recently had her first trim

Rosa needs a little time to get to know someone before becoming completely comfortable, but has never offered to kick, bite, rear or buck. She is up to date on deworming as well and has no known soundness issues.

Rosa has a lot of potential and could make a very interesting barrel racing, gymkhana or all-around prospect. She would be best suited to someone with experience who is looking for an unstarted horse to develop and finish their own way.

Gus is in her second week with us for a little fine-tune before being offered for sale, and she definitely hasn’t disappointed.

Today she was giving us a beautiful, collected trot — balanced, soft and carrying herself nicely.

Sometimes a tune-up isn’t about teaching something new. It’s about polishing what is already there and bringing out the best in the horse. Gus is making that job pretty enjoyable.

Next week will mark Hirvi’s final week of his 3-month training journey, and we’re definitely going to miss having him around. ❤️

From arriving halter broke, to navigating and jumping obstacles, getting weekly lessons with his owner, and even reaching the point where she could lope him herself — Hirvi has come such a long way.

So Léna decided to raise the bar one more time and throw another challenge at him: jumping obstacles in a western saddle.

Hirvi basically said, “Hell yeah, I got this.” 😂

Three months of building his foundation, confidence and understanding have opened so many doors for this young horse.

For Hirvi, the sky seems to be the limit. ❤️

Murdoch has around 8 rides under his belt now, and he’s still figuring out how all of this works. In the turns, I stay patient and give him the time to find the answer instead of pulling him around. He’s also still lacking forward motion, so I’m using my seat a lot and being consistent and firm about asking him to move forward.

At this stage, it’s not about making everything look perfect. It’s about helping him understand that my seat, legs, hands and energy all mean something — and giving him enough time to connect the dots.

Our beloved Freya is for sale !

2023 registered in the heritage division as a half Gypsy ( Quarter Horse × Gypsy Vanner)
Expected to mature around 14.3 hh

Freya is a sweet, smart young mare with a great brain and a fantastic work ethic. She is always the first one waiting at the gate, eager to come with you, and learns exceptionally quickly.

She has been handled almost daily since she was a yearling and has been lightly started under saddle with a strong focus on foundation. She walks, trots, lopes, backs up, stops, and is beginning to respond to leg and seat aids while developing softness in the bridle.

Freya is a nice mover with more “go” than “whoa.” She has been ridden in an outdoor arena, fields, and along range roads, rides alone or with other horses, and has been exposed to a variety of obstacles and we roped a dummy on her back.

She is easy to catch, saddle, and bridle and has shown no buck, bolt, rear, or kick.

Freya is ready to go in many directions. She could make a great ranch prospect, all-around horse, or versatile partner for someone looking for a young horse with a solid foundation to finish their own way.

She is also very people-oriented and family friendly on the ground. She enjoys attention and is happy to be brushed and handled, although because of her age and current level of training, she is best suited to an intermediate or experienced rider.

The only reason Freya is available is because she is ready for her next chapter. She thrives on learning and having a purpose, and we cannot give her the consistency she deserves.

She is UTD on feet ( on a regular farrier schedule over the last 2 years), dental ( May 2026), deworming and vaccine.

No known health or soundness issues.
PPEs are welcome.

Today, we heard the heartbreaking news that Nova — Talma — has passed away.

Our hearts are broken, and we can only imagine the pain her new owner is feeling. We are incredibly grateful that, for her last two months, Nova knew love, peace, kindness and what it felt like to truly be cared for. She deserved that.

When a horse leaves our program, we don't simply stop caring because the training is done. We follow their journeys, celebrate their successes, love receiving updates and remember every horse who has passed through our hands. They leave a little piece of themselves with us.

Nova's story is also an important reminder of something we cannot say enough: basic horse care matters.

Deworm your horses.
Get their teeth done.
Take care of their feet.
And please, do the damn vaccines.

These things may seem routine, easy to postpone, or like another expense — but they matter. What we do, or don't do, for our horses today can follow them for years.

Nova couldn't change her past. But she did get two months where she was safe, peaceful and loved exactly as she deserved to be.

Rest easy, sweet girl. 🤍
