Comforting your pet doesn't reinforce their fear.

Fear can't be reinforced by something your pet likes because fear is an involuntary physiological response. An animal is never going to choose to be fearful in a situation to get a treat, pets, etc, because it's an involuntary response to something that scares them.

We can improve a scary situation with thoughtful desensitization and counter-conditioning when at a level that doesn't send a pet over their threshold. In situations we know are "too much", the best practice is to remove the source of the fear (or get your pet out of that situation), when possible.

There are also a plethora of medications that can be used both situationally and around the clock. Talk to your vet or a veterinary behaviorist to see if any of those medications may be a good option for your pet.

In short, comforting your pet is A-OK, but we do need to get a plan in place to support them and work on their fear long-term.

⭐ Pick the quietest area of your home
⭐ Cover the windows
⭐ Set up a speaker
⭐ Provide enrichment
⭐ Provide all necessities (including comfort items)

If you haven't already, get your pet's medications refilled as well!
