Positive reinforcement is sometimes misunderstood as letting dogs do whatever they want—or constantly bribing them with treats.
That is not what thoughtful reward-based training looks like.
Dogs still need clear expectations, consistency and appropriate boundaries. My job is to teach them what to do within those boundaries and help their families understand how to guide them successfully.
That means meeting the dog’s needs, managing the environment, preventing unwanted behaviour from becoming a well-practised habit and teaching a more appropriate alternative.
Rewards help make the desired choice worthwhile while the dog is learning. Over time, those rewards can become more varied and less frequent as the behaviour becomes stronger and more naturally integrated into everyday life.
The goal is not simply to stop behaviour. It is to develop practical, reliable skills while protecting the dog’s confidence, well-being and trust in their family.
Meet their needs. Manage the environment. Teach the desired behaviour. Reward progress. Practise gradually in real life.
