Part 3 of the river tank rebuild — finally putting it back together.

After the leak, the cleanup, and a lot of waiting, it was finally time to get the tank back in place and start rebuilding it piece by piece.

Filter, powerhead, substrate, heater, decor, then the refill.

At this point, the whole process has taken more than a week and a half, and the fish are definitely ready to get out of their temporary holding bins.

But we’re still not rushing it. We need to check the parameters and make sure the tank is ready before any fish go back in.

We thought the river tank was ready for testing — but it was still leaking.

After moving it outside and rinsing it out, we re-sealed the area where we believed the original leak was coming from and filled the tank to test it.

At first, everything looked okay.

We watched closely, marked the water line with tape, and waited.

But then we saw water on the tarp and dripping onto the patio — and by the end, the water level had dropped more than condensation could explain.

So now, the tank still needs more work.

Our river tank sprang a leak — and this was the start of the emergency response.

What started as water dripping from the front left corner quickly became a full tank problem.

We tried to figure out exactly where the leak was coming from, but it became clear we were going to have to empty the entire tank.

So the fish went into emergency holding bins and buckets, separated by size, while we drained the rest of the water and substrate and got the tank fully emptied.

This is just Part 1.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we move the tank, clean it out, and test the seal.

Last week, we said goodbye to our angelfish, Spot.

He was one of our favorite fish — gentle, familiar, and a real part of this tank for us.

So instead of focusing on the hard moment, we wanted to remember him the way he was when he was well.

Watching him move through the tank, come up to us, and just be himself.

Fishkeeping brings a lot of beauty.
And sometimes, a lot of love too.

We’ve been a little quiet lately, and honestly, a lot has been happening behind the scenes.

Between managing our tanks, keeping up with business, and dealing with a few unexpected issues, posting has taken a back seat for a little while.

Our river tank sprang a leak, which meant fully emptying it and starting the process of rebuilding and re-sealing it.

But it will be back — and probably better than ever.

At the same time, business has been busy, the tanks are still moving forward, and there’s still a lot of good happening here too. The tropical tank has kept growing in, the schools are re-settling, the molly tank is changing, and the shrimp tank is doing really well with new babies and a growing population.

So yes — we’ve been quieter than usual.

But we’re still here, and we’ll be sharing more soon about the river tank rebuild and everything happening behind the scenes.

If you want a freshwater tank around 71–75°F, these are 6 fish worth looking at.

For a cooler freshwater setup, a really nice list would be:

dojo loaches
White Cloud Mountain minnows
zebra danios
gold barbs
rosy barbs
hillstream loaches

This is a good reminder that not every great freshwater fish belongs in a warmer tropical tank. Some of the most interesting community fish actually do really well in slightly cooler water.

What’s the real deal with GloFish?

Some fishkeepers do not want them because they’re genetically modified, and that alone is enough to turn some people off.

At the same time, they can add some really bold and unusual color combinations to a tank.

The important thing is remembering that they are still real fish with the behavior of the species they come from. That means they still need proper schooling, the right tankmates, and a setup that actually suits them. Some types can also be nippy or more active than people expect.

So no, they’re not for everyone.

But in the right aquarium, they can absolutely be a fun and colorful addition.

If we were building a beautiful warm-water community tank, these are 4 fish we’d seriously consider.

A really attractive mix would be:

1 pair of apistogrammas
8–10 rummy nose tetras
German blue ram
either kuhli loaches or corydoras for the bottom

Kuhli loaches give you a more elusive, planted-tank feel, while corydoras bring more visible bottom activity and personality.

With enough space, cover, and thoughtful planning, this can make a really beautiful freshwater community setup.

If we were stocking a peaceful beginner tank of 30 gallons or more, these are 5 fish we’d seriously consider together.

A really nice mix would be:

1 honey gourami
8–10 cardinal tetras
8–10 harlequin rasboras
6–8 corydoras of the same species
6+ cherry barbs

That gives you a calm centerpiece fish, peaceful schooling movement, bottom activity, and a little extra color and energy.

With good planning, this can make a really beautiful beginner community setup.
