Moose wrapped up his training earlier this week! 🫎🐾
Dachshunds have become very popular (I feel like every other item I see at Winners has a dachshund on it lol). They’re cute little weenies but they come with a biggg bark that can drive you mad if you don’t know how to manage it. Why are they so vocal? A few reasons.
Historically, they were bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals, so that loud bark came in handy to alert their handler of their location. They’re also just naturally alert, territorial, and suspicious of strangers, and noises, and if the wind blows the wrong way, or someone three streets over breathes too loudly. 🫠
So if you want a tiny home security system or you’re looking for a badger-hunting buddy, this breed is for you.
In all seriousness though, the goal with Moose was not to “stop the barking”—that’s unrealistic and unfair. The goal was to understand what was driving the excessive barking and help him become more neutral around those triggers, so he doesn’t feel the need to react to everything little thing.
Moose’s biggest trigger was other dogs. His mom and I worked through that together with him and their walks have become exponentially better and more relaxing for both of them. Progress over perfection always.
