🚨 UNUSUAL TICK ALERT: Gulf Coast Tick Found Locally! 🚨

We wanted to share an important update after a local pet owner recently removed a Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum) from her dog.

While Blacklegged Ticks and American Dog Ticks are common in our area, Gulf Coast ticks are native to southern regions and rarely seen here.

The Great News:
Because this pup was up to date on her veterinary-prescribed tick prevention, the medication worked as intended—killing the tick immediately upon attachment!

Why Prevention Matters:

Expanding Ranges: Ticks are traveling farther north, bringing new species and new diseases into our community.

Effective Defense: Vet-approved preventives (chews or topicals) ensure that even if an unusual tick hitches a ride, your pet stays safe.

Celebrating Chance & Feline Health! 🐾🏆

Feline February is all about "flipping the stats" and ensuring our cats get the veterinary care they deserve. We held a special draw for every cat who came in for an exam in February and March—and Chance is our big winner!

***Cat Dental Disease***

Cats are masters at hiding pain, which means dental disease often goes unnoticed.

Two of the most common problems we see are periodontal disease (gingivitis, bacteria, pain and eventually loose teeth) and tooth resorption, a very painful condition where the body is breaks down portions of the teeth (see X-ray picture).

Because cats are both prey and predators, they instinctively mask discomfort. Many will continue eating even with severe dental disease.

Annual exams are essential. They allow your veterinarian to spot dental issues early and protect your cat’s long‑term health.

What can you do at home?
• Tooth brushing is the gold standard—but many cats simply won’t allow it.
• Our doctors at FMAH recommend feline dental diets such as Royal Canin Dental or Hill’s T/D. These specially designed kibbles help clean teeth as your cat chews, and most cats love them.
