We had an amazing time at the Broke Betty Barrel Bash this weekend! What an awesome event put on by Karyssa Hiebert and all her volunteers and sponsors. The ground was awesome and the weather was great. Teri and I had so much fun we can’t wait to attend again in 2027. We both won a buckle, which I think is pretty cool! I’ll say mine was a bit more special as it was my first one ever!

What a great end to the 2026 Denim & Dust Barrel Racing Series! I had a pretty solid run on Marvel, landing me the coolest prize I’ve ever won at any event.
Bailie’s run we won’t talk about, let’s just say I’ve got some work to do there (all on me🤦‍♂️). Hard to believe there is only a handful of races left this season.

How Chris spent his weekend. Making hay is a multi step process! First you cut, then you bale, then you gather them all up. If only we could snap our fingers and have hay season done with 🫰

Some food for thought… why do you barrel race? Is it the money, prizes, fun, improvement?

When I run, I don’t focus on money or prizes. Instead I work towards attaining my personal best. If I win something, that’s secondary and a wonderful bonus.

I don’t want to be disappointed with a run just because I didn’t win something. It’s not just about the fastest time for me. Did I have my fastest run to 1st barrel? Did I have a smoother run? Did I stay calm and relaxed before my run? These are some of the things I consider wins!

Don’t worry about what others are doing… run your race and be proud of the things that are important to you.

Sometimes knowing when to leave something alone would be a superpower! The A/C in the barn was working great…Then I thought hey let’s just pop a little hole in the corner to let the water out of the unit better! That’s when the superpower should have activated, instead the voice in my head said “sure that’s a great idea” Wrong! I got the little hole drilled, only problem was the bit caught just a little bit and pulled up and of course poked a little hole into a condenser pipe. A/C dead, picked up another one in the morning. Why are lessons always expensive.

Sonic is home! Feels so good to have the little man home again. He’s not allowed to scare the crap out of us again…EVER! Huge shout out to the staff at Elm Creek Equine for taking such good care of him and Angel.

An important part of barrel racing is recognizing when you need to make some changes. Chris’s previous run was wide on the barrels and when we reviewed the video, he was leaning too far in, causing his horse to float away.

So the game plan tonight was to stay square in the saddle and trust his horse. This run was much smoother and faster!

Never be ashamed to ask for help or advice! It’s an important part of improving as a rider. We’re lucky that our fellow barrel racers are always willing to share their knowledge.

As you ALL know we just had a bit of a heatwave 🙄. So we’ll try and get ahead of the next one, put an a/c unit in the barn. I see a few more hot days coming up so I hope I don’t have to use it but we’re prepared if we do.
