We're thrilled to share that one of our own patients and long time clients had an incredible performance at the FEI Para Dressage World Championship this August! 🐴✨

Reading about their journey and success in the ring is exactly why we do what we do — every checkup, every treatment plan, and every late-night call is about helping horses like this one perform at their very best.

Huge congratulations to their whole team behind this duo! We're so grateful to be part of your journey. 💙

Meet Orla Redmond, our third intern this year!

Growing up in the French countryside, Orla spent her formative years doing what she does best—exploring. Whether it was wandering through forests or discovering hidden trails, that curiosity and love of the outdoors shaped who she is today.

This summer, she graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, and now she's bringing that adventurous spirit to the team. When she's not here learning equine medicine, you'll find her doing what she loves most: running with friends and soaking up the BC landscape. We love that our interns bring their whole selves to the clinic—and Orla's passion for staying active and connected is exactly what makes our team thrive.

Here's to Orla and an amazing internship ahead! 🐴

Five years ago Lisa joined the PMVS office team, and she's been a steady part of it ever since.

If you've called the clinic worried about your horse, there's a good chance Lisa was the voice on the other end — calm, kind, and never rushing you off the phone, even on the busy days. She's part of the crew that keeps the schedule together and our vets organized and on the road, and she's the kind of teammate who notices what needs doing and quietly does it.

Come by in person and you'll get a second greeting — from Evie, Lisa's "drawer dog," who clocks in whenever Lisa does and has firmly claimed her spot in the office.

Happy 5 years, Lisa. Thank you for everything you bring to this team and to our clients. Here's to many more!

Wow! A huge congratulations to one of our longtime clients Kassidy Keith and Havana on winning the 2026 ATCO Cup Grand Prix at Thunderbird Show Park!

What an electric moment to witness. 🏆💙

There’s nothing better than seeing our clients absolutely crush their goals and shine at the highest level. Watching Kassidy and Havana’s dedication, hard work, passion and most of all team work, come together in a moment like this is exactly why we love what we do. Recently we had a patient come in who reminded us that horses can surprise us—even in spaces we think are completely safe.

A routine paddock visit turned into an emergency stitching session when a horse caught a wound on a fence hazard. It was in a spot nobody expected them to reach. Under Dr. Javier Martinez's supervision, interns Tiana Pavan and Marilyn Mullan-Fraser worked through wound assessment and suturing, turning an unexpected case into a valuable learning experience for the team.

The reality? Horses are curious, flexible, and sometimes just end up in the wrong place at the right time. It happens to the best of us—which is why regular paddock and stall inspections are so important.

Make it part of your routine to check for:
- Protruding nails, bolts, or metal edges
- Splintered or broken boards
- Gaps where horses can catch legs or heads
- Loose fencing or wire
- Anything worn or in disrepair

A few minutes of inspection can catch hazards before they become emergencies. It's not about perfection—it's about being proactive!

🐴 We're thrilled to welcome Helena to the Paton and Martin team as our new equine intern!

Helena is a fresh graduate of the University of Edinburgh's Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery program, and she brings a unique perspective to equine care. During her studies, she developed a passion for the role of working equids in food security — even completing an intercalated degree in agricultural science and spending time at a charity hospital in Morocco.

When she's not diving into equine medicine, you'll find Helena exploring the beautiful BC trails, working on her climbing skills, or knitting her next cozy jumper. 🧶

We're excited to support her learning journey in surgery, internal medicine, and anaesthesia this internship. Welcome to the team, Helena! 🎉

🚨 Uterine Torsion in a Pregnant Mare 🚨

This mare was presented at approximately 9 months of gestation with signs of acute colic. (For reference, pregnancy in horses typically lasts around 11 months.)

A re**al examination revealed a uterine torsion, a condition where the pregnant uterus twists on itself, putting both the mare and foal at risk. She was immediately referred to our hospital for emergency surgery.

Dr. Natacha Bonomelli and the surgical team took the mare to surgery, where she was placed under general anesthesia and an exploratory laparotomy was performed. Once the abdomen was opened, the challenge began. A 9-month pregnant uterus is incredibly large and heavy, yet it must be handled with extreme care to avoid injury to the uterus and its unborn foal. After a great deal teamwork & persistence, the torsion was successfully corrected.

The mare recovered well from surgery and was able to continue her pregnancy.

Fast forward a few months… she delivered a healthy filly! ❤️

We feel incredibly fortunate that both mare and foal had such a successful outcome, and the entire team was thrilled to see them both doing so well!

Meet Paige!

Heard a friendly voice when you called the office on Saturday? Chances are you talked to Paige! She's been a part of the Paton and Martin team since last August, and she absolutely loves what she does—from connecting with clients to coordinating surgeries to diving deeper into equine care.

She lives at her family farm, where she shares her acreage with Clyde (her pitbull) and Gatsby, a horse you might know from the show circuit as "The Great Gatsby." Paige and Gatsby regularly compete in performance hunters and derbies.

When she's not at work or the barn, you'll find her reading, crushing it at the gym, or training in jiu jitsu.

We're lucky to have her on the team!
