With wildfire smoke affecting air quality across the community, it is important to remember that animals, like humans, can be extremely sensitive to smoke and ash. Smoke can irritate their eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.

Which Pets are Most at Risk?
- Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boxers, and Persian cats.
- Senior pets, puppies, and kittens.
- Pets with pre-existing conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, or heart disease.
- Birds, whose specialized respiratory systems make them extraordinarily sensitive to airborne toxins.

Watch closely for signs of smoke irritation such as:
- Coughing, gagging, or retching
- Wheezing, rapid breathing, or unusual panting
- Watery, red, or inflamed eyes
- Nasal discharge or sneezing
- Lethargy, weakness, or reduced appetite

What can owners do?
- Limit Outdoor Time: Keep bathroom breaks brief and avoid long walks or outdoor play until the air quality improves.
- Exercise Indoors: Swap outdoor activities for some indoor mental enrichment, like puzzle toys, trick practice, or hide-and-seek with treats.
- Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible
- Keep fresh water available at all times

If your pet exhibits persistent coughing, open-mouth breathing (especially in cats), or laboured respiration, please call our clinic team right away.

August 1st — also known as Dogust, is the universal birthday for shelter and rescue dogs whose exact birthdates are unknown. It's a special day to celebrate these amazing companions and, really, all the dogs who fill our lives with unconditional love.
