Blood pressure is an important part of a senior pet's wellness exam because high blood pressure (hypertension) often has no obvious signs until it has already caused damage. Just like in people, many older dogs and cats can have hypertension without looking sick.

The main reasons veterinarians check blood pressure in our pets include:

🩺 Detect high blood pressure early. Hypertension can silently damage organs over time before owners notice any changes.
👁️ Protect the eyes. High blood pressure can cause retinal bleeding or detachment, leading to sudden blindness, especially in cats.
🧠 Protect the brain. Hypertension increases the risk of strokes, seizures, or changes in behavior and mental function.
❤️ Monitor heart health. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder and can contribute to heart disease.
🩸 Assess kidney health. Kidney disease is common in senior pets, and it both causes and is worsened by high blood pressure.
🦋 Screen for hormonal diseases. Conditions such as hyperthyroidism (common in older cats), Cushing's disease, and diabetes can be associated with hypertension.

It is especially important for our senior pets because as they age, they're more likely to develop diseases that affect blood pressure. Even if bloodwork is normal, blood pressure may still be elevated, so it provides information that routine blood tests alone cannot.
