During his treatment, Sam wore a FreeStyle Libre® glucose monitor, which allowed us to monitor his glucose levels continuously without repeated blood draws. This technology helps us better understand how a patient's blood sugar changes throughout the day, allowing us to make more informed insulin adjustments while reducing stress for both pets and their owners.
So, what is diabetes in cats?
Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar. The good news is that with early diagnosis, appropriate insulin therapy or oral medication, a proper diet, and close monitoring, some cats can achieve diabetic remission which means they no longer require daily medication.
Some of the most common signs of diabetes include:
💧 Drinking significantly more water than usual
🚽 Producing larger amounts of urine and urinating more frequently
⚖️ Weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite
🐾 Walking on their hocks (appearing weak or flat-footed in the back legs)
