There is a good reason that Dr. Lisa McCrea is smiling today! The Agwest advanced reproduction team made 267 oocytes (cow eggs) from 16 IVF Holstein and Angus donor cows today at the Advanced Reproduction Centre. That’s over 16 oocytes per cow this cycle. Once fertilized and implanted into recipient heifers, that’s going to be a lot of new pregnancies for our clients and a lot of great genetic gains for their farms.

Yup, Agwest vets work with bison too!

A veterinary herd health visit for farmed bison is similar in purpose to visits conducted for cattle, but it often requires additional attention to handling and stress reduction because bison are less domesticated and can be more reactive. The specific procedures that we do depends on the farm’s production goals and health status, but typically include:

General herd health assessment, Vaccination programs, Parasite control, Reproductive management, Disease surveillance, Nutritional evaluation, Individual animal examination, and Record review and planning.

Because bison can become stressed more easily than cattle, veterinarians often emphasize minimizing handling time, using well-designed facilities, and performing as many necessary procedures as possible during a single gathering of the herd. This approach helps reduce stress on the animals and lowers the risk of injury to both the bison and handlers.

It was a pleasure helping SAINTS Rescue and Betty out with her mastectomy! Her large udder was certainly reducing the quality of her life and had the potential of becoming an even larger problem. Betty’s surgery was a day procedure at our Abbotsford facility followed by a relatively short ten day recovery back at home. Complications from this procedure are very rare and she should expect a completely happy, normal life now without that udder dragging on the ground.

Agwest offers full-service on-farm and in-clinic medicine and surgical procedures for cattle, sheep, goats and camelids.

The entire team at Agwest is so happy to call Kristen a colleague! She is amazingly smart, hard-working, compassionate, and a team-player. And she loves cows!! Thank-you Kristen for everything that you do for Agwest, our clients and their animals!

Based in Abbotsford, Kristen works as a Registered Veterinary Technician with Agwest Veterinary Group, helping animals (and the people who care for them) thrive.

For Kristen, dairy is deeply personal — it’s connected to her family, her career, and many of the relationships in her life. She also believes strongly in the importance of Canadian food production and maintaining access to locally produced dairy products.

This Dairy Month, we’re celebrating the people who help drive BC’s dairy industry forward every day.🥛

Agwest works with over sixty dairy herds between the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island. The majority of our clients milk Holstein cows but there are also Jersey and Ayrshire farms and even one large Water Buffalo herd!

Regardless of the breed, Agwest veterinarians work hard to help our farm clients improve the health and well-being of their cattle and maintain profitable and sustainable farm businesses.

Advance Reproduction is one of Agwest’s core services. Two of our senior veterinarians, Dr. Lisa McCrea and Dr. Jackie Wrigglesworth are certified by the Canadian Embryo Transfer Association (CETA) for both domestic and export out of Canada production of embryos. With a combined experience of over 35 years, these two vets know how to produce quality embryos!

Today, Dr. Lisa and her support staff team were working on 10 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) holstein and beef donors who are projected to produce over 150 oocytes (eggs) in this cycle.

Our team also collected 2 yearling Holstein heifers by conventional Embryo Transfer (ET) flush today. One produced the 9 beautiful grade 1 embryos in the photo below that are being frozen for export to Europe!

Our team is proud to help our clients produce the next generation of great genetic cattle, for both improving their own herds as well as off-farm sales - locally and abroad.
