Lameness is something we take seriously here at Horizon Equine. With all of the advancements in diagnosing and treating equine lameness now available, we are passionate about getting to the root of the issue and treating lameness at its source.

With this underlying principle in mind, Horizon Equine embarked on a journey to get all of its veterinarians certified in the use and interpretation of the Equinosis Lameness Locator, a leading objective gait analysis system we use regularly in practice. We are proud to announce that we have achieved that goal, with Drs. Steve Chiasson, Lauren Jeffery, Sarah Squinas, and Jane Westendorf all achieving their Equinosis Certified Practitioner designation! Dr. Chelsey Wood is also on the way to achieving her certification since joining us in July.

The Equinosis Certified Practitioner program involves hours of approved continuing education, exams, and even the production of a case report. Horizon Equine is proud to be the only practice in Canada whose veterinarians have this certification. 🇨🇦

How it started… and how it’s going!

Horizon Equine sends a huge congratulations to Lauren Macdonald of Black Diamond Farm on the success of her c**t at the 2026 Friesian keuring! Iconic of Black Diamond Farm (Ulbran 502 x Beart 411) was awarded first premie and was the reserve champion foal at the keuring 🏆

Dr. Jane Westendorf and the Horizon Equine team were proud to have a hand in the creation of this handsome little guy - check out his first ultrasound photo taken 14 days after his dam, Gabriella of Endymion Farms, was bred via artificial insemination at our clinic.

With our recent expansion to add Dr. Chelsey Wood to our roster, Horizon Equine was also in need of more administrative support. We were absolutely thrilled to be able to add Mandy Petraschuk to our wonderful team of Care Coordinators!

Mandy brings with her many years of experience managing her family business. This, together with her background as a horse owner and equine massage therapist, has made Mandy a natural fit for her new role, and she is already at home in our Welcome Centre!

A huge thank-you and shout out to James Warren of J.W Farrier Services for helping keep our veterinarians’ hoof tools in tip-top shape! James offered his time to sharpen our hoof knives and nippers, which was especially helpful in this time of year when feet are dry and hard.🥵

Campbell Valley Equestrian Society’s new arena was officially unveiled yesterday evening to kick off the this weekend’s Horse Trials! This arena was made possible due to a combined effort of the Society and the local equestrian community and will be enjoyed by competitive and recreational riders for years to come.

This beautiful horseshoe plaque commemorates Horizon Equine’s sponsorship of the arena. We are also proud sponsors of the Campbell Valley Horse Trials and wish a fun and safe show to all competitors.

Gastric ulcers are a common cause of poor performance and behavioural changes in horses… but they aren’t the only cause!

Dr. Chelsey Wood and veterinary assistants Adele and Catalina performed a gastroscopy on this young Quarter Horse mare today. She has had some recent behavioural difficulties and the gastroscopy was conducted to rule out gastric ulcers. Fortunately for the mare, her stomach looked great and now the search is on to figure out what is troubling her.

With August just around the corner, breeding season is wrapping up here at Horizon Equine. We are still getting through our final pregnancy exams of the summer, and thought we’d share this neat image of an approximately 35-day embryo in a Miniature Horse mare. Amazing how the foal is already taking shape just over a month into pregnancy. We can’t wait to see this adorable little one next spring!

Horizon Equine was a proud sponsor of the BC Versatility Ranch Association’s Cowboy Summer Classic this past weekend in Merritt! This show was the first of its kind in BC, and its welcoming and diverse atmosphere saw the inclusion of horse and rider combinations from various western disciplines trying their hand at Ranch Versatility. It was a fantastic display of horsemanship and stockmanship.

Ranch Versatility is comprised of five events: Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail, Ranch Reining, Ranch Cow Work, and Ranch Cutting. Horses are judged on their suitability for work on a real ranch rather than the show ring, and a practical and freely moving way of going is rewarded.

We are thrilled to officially welcome Dr. Chelsey Wood to Horizon Equine!

Some of you may have already met Dr. Wood when she spent time with us this spring. From the start, her exceptional clinical skills, friendly approach, and genuine passion for equine medicine made her a natural fit for our growing practice.

Originally from Mission, BC, Dr. Wood's journey into veterinary medicine began with a career as a Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT), where she gained experience in small animal practice, emergency medicine, pathology, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. She went on to complete her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at the University of Saskatchewan before recently finishing an intensive internship in equine medicine and surgery at Moore Equine in Calgary.

Dr. Wood officially joined Horizon Equine on July 6, and is already working alongside our veterinarians while getting to know our clients and their horses. She will soon begin seeing appointments of her own, and we couldn't be more excited to have her as part of our growing team.

Her diverse experience, dedication to exceptional patient care, and love for horses make her a wonderful addition to Horizon Equine.
