It’s National Veterinary Technician Week, which is a time to show appreciation for the skill and dedication Registered Veterinary Technicians/Technologists (RVT’s) bring to the veterinary profession.

Did you know that our newest veterinarian, Dr. Chelsey Wood, started her career in the industry as an RVT? Dr. Wood is a graduate of Thompson Rivers University’s RVT program, and worked in many different sectors of veterinary medicine prior to and during veterinary school. The insight and experience she gained from her years as an RVT have given Dr. Wood a unique set of skills which have helped make her a fantastic doctor.

This week, let’s give a shout out to Dr. Wood and all of the amazing RVT’s in our lives!

Remember our post about Horizon Equine’s veterinarians and their certification with Equinosis’s Lameness Locator objective gait analysis system?

Well, we value the education of our veterinary assistants just as much! Horizon Equine’s team of highly skilled veterinary assistants also completed the Equinosis course for technicians and assistants, which requires knowledge of the science behind the system and how to properly use the equipment on the horse. We are lucky to have such a competent group of ladies helping us out on the road and in the clinic.

Shown here is our amazing assistant team. From left to right: Leila Lucas, Laura Leitch, Jenny Howard, Adele Wong, Leanne From, Mackenzie Faye, and Catalina Berezan.

Leila and copilot, Tula, enjoyed another Sunshine Coast trip with Dr. Jane Westendorf this past week. Despite a rainy morning, the coast lived up to its name and the rest of the day was beautiful!

Horizon Equine recently celebrated three years of Sunshine Coast service and is proud to continue offering trips on average twice a month from Gibsons to Pender Harbour and surrounding areas. If you’re a horse owner on the Sunshine Coast and would like to join in on an upcoming trip, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Ever wonder about the benefits of equine veterinary spinal manipulative therapy (VSMT)? Toupie has become one of Dr. Jane Westendorf’s regular senior patients over the past summer and he is the king of making funny faces during his treatments! Though Toupie is retired, his VSMT treatments have improved his gait, muscling, ability to roll, and his general wellbeing. These are some of the many benefits to VSMT that our senior patients in particular love!

Lameness is something we take seriously here at Horizon Equine. With all of the advancements in diagnosing and treating equine lameness now available, we are passionate about getting to the root of the issue and treating lameness at its source.

With this underlying principle in mind, Horizon Equine embarked on a journey to get all of its veterinarians certified in the use and interpretation of the Equinosis Lameness Locator, a leading objective gait analysis system we use regularly in practice. We are proud to announce that we have achieved that goal, with Drs. Steve Chiasson, Lauren Jeffery, Sarah Squinas, and Jane Westendorf all achieving their Equinosis Certified Practitioner designation! Dr. Chelsey Wood is also on the way to achieving her certification since joining us in July.

The Equinosis Certified Practitioner program involves hours of approved continuing education, exams, and even the production of a case report. Horizon Equine is proud to be the only practice in Canada whose veterinarians have this certification. 🇨🇦

How it started… and how it’s going!

Horizon Equine sends a huge congratulations to Lauren Macdonald of Black Diamond Farm on the success of her c**t at the 2026 Friesian keuring! Iconic of Black Diamond Farm (Ulbran 502 x Beart 411) was awarded first premie and was the reserve champion foal at the keuring 🏆

Dr. Jane Westendorf and the Horizon Equine team were proud to have a hand in the creation of this handsome little guy - check out his first ultrasound photo taken 14 days after his dam, Gabriella of Endymion Farms, was bred via artificial insemination at our clinic.

Way to go Iconic!
