Scientific Insight: Why your pigeon's liver is the ultimate internal navigation compass (and how the 2-phase protocol with Keto-Fly supports it)
Recent groundbreaking research within the pigeon racing community has revealed a fascinating biological mechanism: a racing pigeon's liver acts as an actual magnetic compass. You can find all information in the article provided by P**A
Specific, iron-rich macrophages (immune cells) within the liver react directly to the Earth's magnetic field. This means the liver does not just manage energy production—it is a critical factor in orientation and navigating the shortest route back home.
During extreme physical exertion and endurance flights, this delicate system is under severe pressure from oxidative stress and energy depletion. Since pigeons cannot eat or drink during a race, providing nutrition mid-flight is impossible. The solution lies in strategic metabolic conditioning and the 2-phase protocol of DoCa-Pharma using Fly-Max (1,3-butanediol).

Phase 1: Metabolic Conditioning (weeks to months in advance)
The goal of this training phase is to make both the liver and the flight muscles more flexible in how they burn energy. By systematically integrating ketones into the training schedule before the racing season starts, the pigeon’s body learns to switch seamlessly between sugars, fats, and energy derived from Keto-Fly.
• Optimized muscle and cell metabolism:
The mitochondria (the energy powerhouses) in both the flight muscles and the unique, nucleated red blood cells of the bird are trained to use available fuel much more efficiently.
• Protecting the liver compass:
Thanks to this metabolic flexibility, the liver is far less likely to become depleted during actual racing flights. This prevents the activation of inflammatory complexes (such as the NLRP3 inflammasome) inside the iron-rich macrophages. As a result, the internal compass cells remain protected, sharp, and highly accurate throughout the race.
Phase 2: The Recovery Phase (Immediately upon return)
When a pigeon arrives back from a grueling race, its liver is energetically exhausted, and the navigation macrophages are under acute flight-induced stress. This is the critical moment in the use of the protocol.
• Instant liver relief: Administering Keto-Fly immediately upon arrival provides instantly accessible energy. The liver is spared from performing heavy metabolic work to break down fats or feeds for energy, bringing immediate rest to the organ.
• Activating the repair mode: 1,3-butanediol directly suppresses the inflammatory response in the exhausted macrophages, signalling these cells to switch right over into their anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair state (M2 macrophage polarization). Simultaneously, it helps stabilize the internal cellular environment, ensuring the crucial iron balance within these navigation cells is maintained without causing oxidative damage.
• Rapid fuel for red blood cells: Because avian red blood cells uniquely contain their own active mitochondria, they consume significantly more energy than those of mammals. Upon return, these blood cells compete with depleted muscles for remaining glucose. Keto-Fly feeds these cells directly, drastically accelerating the recovery of total blood vitality and energy levels.

Conclusion for Top Fanciers
The 2-phase protocol by DoCa-Pharma perfectly aligns with the unique biology of the bird. Training withKeto-Fly beforehand builds a metabolic buffer that protects the magnetic liver compass from stress and disorientation while in the air. Deploying Keto-Fly immediately upon return minimizes liver stress and triggers lightning-fast cellular recovery. This ensures your pigeons are fit and ready for the next top performance much faster.
