I absolutely love puppies, and I enjoy everything that comes with breeding. There’s just one thing I find myself enjoying less and less, and that is finding new, suitable owners for my puppies — and this is why.
I’ve always had a list of potential owners, but often by the time the litter is born, many people have already changed their minds, the sexes of the puppies aren’t what they were hoping for, or they’ve already bought a puppy somewhere else.
And this is not only about one particular person. Over the years, I’ve had many people ask for information, have long conversations, sometimes even say that they would like to have one of the puppies, and then suddenly change their minds the next day. Sometimes they say they’ve thought about it again, or that they have realised that now simply isn’t the right time for a puppy.
And honestly, that is completely okay. Getting a puppy is a big decision, and I would much rather someone be honest and realise that a puppy isn’t right for them than take one home when they aren’t completely sure.
But now, the worst thing has happened to me — something I have never experienced before.
Around six weeks of age, all the puppies here had been chosen, and it became clear that Green was the only male left without a home. So we started looking for the right owner for him, and quite quickly we found someone who seemed like a perfect match.
We had a lovely conversation, everything seemed great, the deposit was paid, and they were always enthusiastic and happy about the puppy. Everything seemed to be going exactly as it should...
Until the day came when he was supposed to go to his new home. Suddenly, there were doubts, and they asked if they could pick him up at a later date. That was absolutely no problem for me — I was happy to give them some extra time.
He was supposed to be picked up on Monday. Then, when I woke up that morning, I found a message saying that they were no longer coming to pick up the puppy.
A few days before this happened, someone else had contacted us asking if we still had a male puppy available. Since Green already had an owner at that time, unfortunately, we couldn’t help them.
So when Green suddenly became available again, we contacted this person to let them know. But by then, they had already put themselves forward for another puppy somewhere else — which is completely understandable. Of course, people are going to continue looking when they are searching for a puppy.
Unfortunately, this also means that because of all the uncertainty and hesitation surrounding Green’s original placement, he has now missed out on a lovely home that could have been his. That person has found another puppy, so that opportunity is gone... and that makes me sad..
Meanwhile, I received several messages from the person who had cancelled, saying that she regretted her decision and would still really like to meet Green, see him in person, and find out whether there was a connection between them.
So we made a new appointment for today at 3 PM.
Unfortunately, she never showed up.
Not even a message. Not even a reply to the message I sent her asking if everything was okay.
And honestly, this is something I have never experienced before.
So, to all future puppy owners: please remember that behind every puppy is a breeder who puts an enormous amount of time, love, energy and emotion into raising them.
We completely understand that choosing a puppy is a big decision. It is perfectly okay to change your mind, to realise that a certain puppy isn’t the right match for you, or even to decide that you are not ready for a puppy after all.
What is not okay is simply disappearing, not showing up for an appointment, or leaving someone waiting without any explanation.
Please just be honest and communicate. We are people too, and we will always appreciate honesty much more than being left wondering what happened.
These puppies are not products sitting on a shelf. We raise them, care for them, love them and worry about finding the very best home for each and every one of them.
And that is exactly why finding the right owners has become the hardest part of breeding for me. ❤️
Green is still waiting for the person who will see what a wonderful little boy he is and realise that he was worth waiting for. 💚
