🐄 WHAT IS A PROGESTERONE IMPLANT?

A progesterone implant is an intravaginal device that releases progesterone, a key hormone involved in the reproductive cycle of the cow.

👉 In simple words:
“It temporarily tricks the cow’s body to control and synchronize its reproductive cycle.”

🎯 WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?

The implant is not used to “cure” a disease—it is used to organize and synchronize reproduction.

It is mainly used to:

✅ 1. Synchronize Estrus
Helps bring several cows into heat at approximately the same time.
Ideal for artificial insemination programs.

✅ 2. Improve Pregnancy Rates
It can be particularly useful in cows that are:

* Anestrous (not showing heat)
* Postpartum
* In poor body condition

✅ 3. Schedule Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination (FTAI)

👉 This is important:
You do not have to rely as heavily on detecting estrus.
The insemination can be performed at a predetermined time according to the protocol.

⚙️ HOW DOES IT WORK?

👉 While the implant is in place:
Progesterone suppresses estrus and prevents ovulation.

👉 After the implant is removed:
Progesterone levels decrease, allowing the cow to enter estrus in a more synchronized manner.

Ovulation then occurs within a more predictable time frame.

🧪 BASIC FIELD PROTOCOL

Protocols can vary, but one commonly used approach is:

🔹 Day 0:
Place the progesterone implant.
Administer an estrogen product according to the selected protocol.

🔹 Day 7–9:
Remove the implant.
Administer prostaglandin to induce luteolysis when indicated.
eCG may also be used in some protocols to support ovarian activity.

🔹 Approximately 48–56 hours later:
🔥 Perform fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) without relying on visible estrus.

⏰ RELATIONSHIP WITH ESTRUS — KEY POINT

👉 Without a progesterone implant:
You depend on detecting when the cow shows signs of estrus.
The correct insemination timing can be missed.

👉 With a progesterone-based synchronization protocol:
The reproductive cycle is controlled more precisely.
Estrus and ovulation become more predictable, allowing insemination to be scheduled.

💡 It is like moving from:

❌ “Let’s wait and see when she comes into heat.”

to:

✅ “We have a planned time for insemination based on the synchronization protocol.”

⚠️ COMMON FIELD ERRORS

❌ Incorrect placement of the implant
❌ Failure to follow the prescribed timing
❌ Using the protocol in cows that are severely underconditioned or clinically ill
❌ Poor nutrition and management

👉 Important: The implant does not work miracles.

If the cow is not in adequate nutritional and reproductive condition, pregnancy rates may still be poor.

🔴 WHICH COWS MAY BENEFIT MOST?

✔ Cows that are cycling
✔ Cows more than approximately 45 days postpartum, depending on the production system and protocol
✔ Cows with adequate body condition

⚠️ Progesterone-based protocols can also be useful in anestrous cows, but they should be part of a complete, appropriate synchronization protocol, not used alone.

🎯 CLEAR SUMMARY

👉 A progesterone implant can help to:

• Control the reproductive cycle
• Synchronize estrus
• Schedule fixed-time artificial insemination
• Improve reproductive management and efficiency

💡 A MESSAGE FOR FARMERS

👉 “The progesterone implant doesn’t get the cow pregnant… but it puts the clock on your side.” ⏱️🐄

🐖 ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION IN SWINE — Master the Technique!

Artificial insemination (AI) is a powerful reproductive tool in swine production, helping improve genetic progress, reproductive efficiency, and herd performance.

🔬 Key Anatomy
• Cervix: Interlocking cervical rings help secure the AI catheter.
• Uterine horns: Provide the pathway for s***m transport toward the oviducts.
• Ovaries: Follicles develop and ovulation occurs here.
• Oviducts: The site where fertilization occurs.

🧑‍⚕️ Key Steps
1️⃣ Detect standing estrus accurately.
2️⃣ Clean the v***a and insert the catheter carefully.
3️⃣ Lock the catheter within the cervix.
4️⃣ Allow semen to flow naturally—never force it under pressure.
5️⃣ Maintain proper hygiene and accurate timing relative to ovulation.

⚠️ Remember: Correct estrus detection + proper catheter placement + optimal timing = better reproductive results.

🐄 Choke (Esophageal Obstruction) in Cattle

Choke is an obstruction of the esophagus that prevents the normal passage of feed and water toward the rumen. In cattle, common causes include large pieces of root vegetables, fruits, or other feed materials.

🔬 This anatomical illustration shows the relationship between the esophagus, trachea, cervical structures, major blood vessels, lungs, heart, diaphragm, rumen, and reticulum, with the foreign body lodged in the esophagus.

⚠️ Clinical point:
Choke can lead to free-gas bloat and respiratory distress, making prompt veterinary attention important.

🐂 BOVINE CASTRATION — STEP BY STEP

Castration (orchiectomy) is a common veterinary procedure in male cattle performed to remove or permanently disable testicular function. It results in loss of s***m production and a marked reduction in testosterone production.

🔹 Basic surgical sequence:
1️⃣ Proper restraint and patient assessment
2️⃣ Appropriate anesthesia/analgesia and aseptic preparation
3️⃣ Preparation of the scrotal area
4️⃣ Exposure of the te**is through an appropriate scrotal incision
5️⃣ Exteriorization of the te**is and s***matic cord
6️⃣ Secure control of the s***matic cord and testicular blood vessels
7️⃣ Removal of the te**is
8️⃣ Repeat on the opposite side
9️⃣ Careful assessment for hemorrhage and appropriate postoperative care

📚 Veterinary Student Focus:
Understand the anatomy of the te**is, epididymis, tunica vaginalis, s***matic cord, pampiniform plexus, and testicular blood supply before learning practical castration techniques.

✅ Castration may help prevent unwanted breeding and reduce testosterone-associated sexual behavior and aggression. In production cattle, it can also be part of herd and management practices.

⚠️ Veterinary educational purposes only. The technique, timing, anesthesia, analgesia, and method should be selected according to the animal, age, production system, and veterinary assessment. Procedures should be performed by a qualified veterinarian or under appropriate veterinary supervision.
