🧬 BREAKTHROUGH IN THE REGENT PARROT: LUTINO NOW DNA-TESTABLE!

Two years of research, plenty of puzzling and a healthy dose of perseverance. It paid off: NeorniLab has identified the genetic cause of lutino in the Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus). It is the sex-linked mutation SL ino1, and we can now detect it with a DNA test.

What does this mean for your breeding?

SL ino1 is inherited as a sex-linked recessive trait. A c**k can be split without showing it. A hen is either lutino or not, because she cannot be split. Until now, pedigree and breeding results were all you had to go on. From now on, one DNA test settles it.

✔ Possible split? Get it confirmed.
✔ Bought as split lutino? Verify it.
✔ Pairing up? Plan on certainty, not hope.

Deux ans de recherche, beaucoup de patience et une bonne dose de persévérance. Le résultat est là : NeorniLab a identifié la cause génétique du lutino chez la perruche mélanure (Polytelis anthopeplus). Il s'agit de la mutation liée au sexe SL ino1, que nous pouvons désormais détecter par un test ADN.

Qu'est-ce que cela change pour votre élevage ?

La SL ino1 se transmet de manière récessive liée au sexe. Un mâle peut être porteur (split) sans que rien ne le trahisse. Une femelle, elle, est lutino ou ne l'est pas : elle ne peut pas être porteuse. Jusqu'ici, seules l'ascendance et les résultats d'élevage vous guidaient. Désormais, un seul test ADN tranche.

✔ Vous formez vos couples ? Misez sur la certitude, pas sur l'espoir.

🇳🇱 Een goede voorbereiding is de basis voor een succesvolle kweek!

💉 Laat uw kweekduiven tijdig vaccineren

Veel liefhebbers vaccineren hun kweekduiven pas in februari of maart, samen met de vliegduiven. Voor de kweekduiven is het beter om de vaccinatie tegen paramyxo en herpes vier tot zes weken vóór het koppelen te plannen. Zo kunnen ze antistoffen opbouwen en doorgeven aan hun jongen. Dat kan helpen om problemen tijdens de kweek te beperken.

Met dezelfde inspanning, maar een betere timing, haalt u dus meer uit uw vaccinatie

🔬 Ook een mestcontrole is nu belangrijk

Verzamel gedurende vijf dagen mest van uw duiven en laat die onderzoeken als mengmeststaal. Zo kunnen eventuele problemen tijdig worden opgespoord en kan uw dierenarts bekijken of een gerichte behandeling nodig is.

Bespreek ook de controle op salmonella, een eventuele behandeling of vaccinatie en de aanpak van ectoparasieten met uw dierenarts.

🇫🇷 Une bonne préparation est la base d’une saison d’élevage réussie !

💉 Faites vacciner vos reproducteurs à temps

Beaucoup d’amateurs ne vaccinent leurs reproducteurs qu’en février ou en mars, en même temps que les voyageurs. Pour les reproducteurs, il est préférable de planifier la vaccination contre la paramyxovirose et l’herpès quatre à six semaines avant l’accouplement. Ils peuvent ainsi développer des anticorps et les transmettre à leurs jeunes, ce qui peut aider à limiter les problèmes pendant l’élevage.

Avec le même effort, mais au bon moment, vous tirez ainsi davantage de votre vaccination.

🔬 Un contrôle des fientes s’impose aussi maintenant

Faites analyser un échantillon de fientes mélangées, récoltées pendant cinq jours. Les éventuels problèmes peuvent ainsi être détectés à temps et votre vétérinaire peut évaluer si un traitement ciblé est nécessaire.

Discutez également avec votre vétérinaire du contrôle de la salmonellose (paratyphose), d’un éventuel traitement ou d’une vaccination, ainsi que de la lutte contre les ectoparasites.

🇬🇧 Good preparation is the foundation of a successful breeding season!

💉 Have your breeders vaccinated in time

Many fanciers wait until February or March to vaccinate their breeders, together with the racers. For breeders, it is better to schedule the vaccination against paramyxo and herpes four to six weeks before pairing. This gives them time to build antibodies and pass them on to their young, which can help limit problems during breeding.

With the same effort but better timing, you get more out of your vaccination.

🔬 A droppings check is also important now

Have a pooled sample analysed, made up of droppings collected over five days. Any problems can then be detected early, and your vet can assess whether targeted treatment is needed.

Also discuss salmonella testing, possible treatment or vaccination, and the control of external parasites with your vet.

🇳🇱 🐦 Vogelgriep in België: extra waakzaamheid nodig

De afgelopen dagen werd het hoogpathogene vogelgriepvirus H5N1 vastgesteld bij twee hobbyhouders, in Tongeren-Borgloon en Balen. Rond beide locaties werden beschermings- en bewakingszones ingesteld om verdere verspreiding tegen te gaan.

Dat vraagt om extra aandacht, maar niet om paniek.

Vogelgriep, ook aviaire influenza genoemd, is een besmettelijke virusziekte bij vogels. Het virus kan rechtstreeks worden verspreid via de uitwerpselen van besmette vogels, maar ook onrechtstreeks via besmet voer, drinkwater of materiaal. Wilde vogels, en vooral watervogels, kunnen het virus bovendien meedragen zonder zelf duidelijke symptomen te vertonen.

Wat kunt u als vogelhouder doen?

🔹 Vermijd zoveel mogelijk contact tussen uw vogels en wilde vogels.

🔹 Zorg ervoor dat wilde vogels niet bij het voer of drinkwater kunnen.

🔹 Reinig uw handen, schoeisel en materiaal grondig, zeker wanneer u verschillende vogelverblijven bezoekt.

🔹 Observeer uw vogels dagelijks en wees alert voor afwijkend gedrag, ziekteverschijnselen of verhoogde sterfte.

🔹 Woont u in een beschermings- of bewakingszone? Controleer dan welke specifieke maatregelen voor u gelden.

Ook belangrijk om te weten: volgens Sciensano blijft het risico op overdracht naar de mens zeer laag.

Geen reden dus om ongerust te worden, maar wel een goed moment om bioveiligheid en dagelijkse observatie extra ernstig te nemen.

🇫🇷 🐦 Grippe aviaire en Belgique : une vigilance accrue est nécessaire

Ces derniers jours, le virus hautement pathogène de la grippe aviaire H5N1 a été détecté chez deux détenteurs amateurs, à Tongres-Looz et à Balen. Des zones de protection et de surveillance ont été établies autour des deux sites afin de limiter la propagation du virus.

Cette situation demande une attention accrue, mais il n’y a pas lieu de paniquer.

La grippe aviaire, également appelée influenza aviaire, est une maladie virale contagieuse qui touche les oiseaux. Le virus peut se transmettre directement par les déjections d’oiseaux infectés, mais également indirectement par des aliments, de l’eau ou du matériel contaminés. Les oiseaux sauvages, et en particulier les oiseaux aquatiques, peuvent être porteurs du virus sans présenter de symptômes évidents.

Que pouvez-vous faire en tant que détenteur d’oiseaux ?

🔹 Évitez autant que possible tout contact entre vos oiseaux et les oiseaux sauvages.

🔹 Veillez à ce que les oiseaux sauvages ne puissent pas accéder à la nourriture ou à l’eau de vos oiseaux.

🔹 Nettoyez soigneusement vos mains, vos chaussures et votre matériel, surtout si vous fréquentez plusieurs installations aviaires.

🔹 Observez quotidiennement vos oiseaux et soyez attentif à tout comportement inhabituel, symptôme de maladie ou augmentation de la mortalité.

🔹 Vous résidez dans une zone de protection ou de surveillance ? Vérifiez quelles mesures spécifiques s’appliquent à votre situation.

Autre information importante : selon Sciensano, le risque de transmission à l’être humain reste très faible.

Il n’y a donc aucune raison de s’inquiéter, mais c’est le bon moment pour accorder une attention particulière à la biosécurité et à l’observation quotidienne de vos oiseaux.

🇬🇧 🐦 Bird flu in Belgium: increased vigilance needed

In recent days, the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus has been detected in birds kept by two hobby keepers in Tongeren-Borgloon and Balen. Protection and surveillance zones have been established around both locations to help prevent the virus from spreading.

This calls for extra attention, but there is no reason to panic.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a contagious viral disease affecting birds. The virus can spread directly through the droppings of infected birds, but also indirectly through contaminated feed, water or equipment. Wild birds, particularly waterfowl, can carry the virus without showing clear symptoms.

What can you do as a bird keeper?

🔹 Avoid contact between your birds and wild birds as much as possible.

🔹 Make sure wild birds cannot access your birds’ feed or drinking water.

🔹 Thoroughly clean your hands, footwear and equipment, especially if you visit several aviaries.

🔹 Observe your birds daily and remain alert for unusual behaviour, signs of illness or increased mortality.

🔹 Do you live in a protection or surveillance zone? Check which specific measures apply to you.

It is also important to know that, according to Sciensano, the risk of transmission to humans remains very low.

There is therefore no reason for alarm, but this is a good time to take biosecurity and daily observation especially seriously.

We are getting ready for The XI International Parrot Convention at Loro Parque, Congreso Internacional sobre Papagayos de Tenerife ! 🦜

Once every four years, the parrot world gathers in Puerto de la Cruz. Let's just say that for a lab working on avian DNA and colour genetics, there's no better place to be.

🦟 Westnijlvirus vastgesteld bij kleurkanaries

Bij NeorniVet bevestigden we recent westnijlvirus (WNV) bij kleurkanaries, via gericht labo-onderzoek. Voor zover wij weten is dit het eerste bevestigde geval bij kleurkanaries in België.

Het virus circuleert sinds 2025 in ons land tussen steekmuggen en wilde vogels. Deze zomer werd het ook bij paarden en bij wilde vogels in verschillende regio's aangetoond.

Wat ons opviel: bij deze kanaries zagen we een zeer acuut verloop en zware sterfte. Sommige vogels zaten één dag dik (opgezette veren) en waren de dag nadien dood. Er is dus bijzonder weinig tijd om in te grijpen.

Kanaries blijken bijzonder gevoelig te kunnen zijn voor het westnijlvirus. Experimenteel onderzoek toonde eerder een zeer snelle virusvermeerdering en hoge sterfte aan bij besmette kanaries. Dat kan het bijzonder acute verloop dat wij in deze uitbraak vaststellen mee verklaren.

⚠️ Waar let je op?
- plots dik zitten, opgezette veren
- sufheid, minder activiteit
- verminderde eetlust
- zenuwsymptomen: scheve hals, coördinatieverlies, verlamming
- onverwachte sterfte in korte tijd

🦟 Wat kan je zelf doen?
- muggengaas voor ramen en volières
- stilstaand water vermijden: drinkbakken dagelijks verversen, regentonnen afdekken, schotels leegmaken
- vogels extra afschermen bij zonsondergang, wanneer muggen het actiefst zijn
- voor vogels bestaat er geen vaccin, muggenwering is je enige echte bescherming

Belangrijk om te weten: een besmette vogel geeft het virus niet rechtstreeks door aan mensen of aan andere dieren. Daarvoor is altijd een mug nodig.

En even goed: niet iedere vogel die plots sterft, heeft westnijlvirus. Ook andere oorzaken kunnen een gelijkaardig beeld geven. Goede diagnostiek blijft essentieel.

🦟 Virus du Nil occidental détecté chez des canaris de couleur

Chez NeorniVet, nous avons récemment confirmé la présence du virus du Nil occidental (VNO) chez des canaris de couleur, par analyse de laboratoire ciblée. À notre connaissance, il s'agit du premier cas confirmé chez des canaris de couleur en Belgique.

Le virus circule depuis 2025 dans notre pays entre les moustiques et les oiseaux sauvages. Cet été, il a également été mis en évidence chez des chevaux et chez des oiseaux sauvages dans plusieurs régions.

Ce qui nous a frappés : chez ces canaris, l'évolution était très aiguë et la mortalité importante. Certains oiseaux restaient une journée en boule (plumage ébouriffé) et étaient morts le lendemain. Le temps d'intervention est donc extrêmement court.

Les canaris semblent pouvoir être particulièrement sensibles au virus du Nil occidental. Des travaux expérimentaux ont montré auparavant une multiplication virale très rapide et une mortalité élevée chez des canaris infectés. Cela peut contribuer à expliquer l'évolution particulièrement aiguë que nous constatons dans ce foyer.

⚠️ À quoi faut-il être attentif ?

- oiseau soudainement en boule, plumage ébouriffé
- abattement, activité réduite
- baisse de l'appétit
- symptômes nerveux : torticolis, perte de coordination, paralysie
- mortalité inattendue en peu de temps

🦟 Que pouvez-vous faire vous-même ?

- placer des moustiquaires devant les fenêtres et les volières
- éviter les eaux stagnantes : renouveler les abreuvoirs chaque jour, - couvrir les citernes d'eau de pluie, vider les soucoupes
- protéger davantage les oiseaux au coucher du soleil, lorsque les moustiques sont les plus actifs
- il n'existe pas de vaccin pour les oiseaux, la lutte contre les moustiques est votre seule véritable protection

Important à savoir : un oiseau infecté ne transmet pas directement le virus à l'homme ni à d'autres animaux. Un moustique est toujours nécessaire.

Et tout aussi important : tout oiseau qui meurt subitement n'est pas atteint du virus du Nil occidental. D'autres causes peuvent donner un tableau comparable. Un bon diagnostic reste essentiel.

🦟 West Nile virus confirmed in colour canaries

At NeorniVet, we recently confirmed West Nile virus (WNV) in colour canaries through targeted laboratory testing. As far as we know, this is the first confirmed case in colour canaries in Belgium.

The virus has been circulating in this country since 2025 between mosquitoes and wild birds. This summer it was also detected in horses and in wild birds in several regions.

What struck us: in these canaries we saw a very acute course and heavy losses. Some birds sat fluffed up for a single day and were dead the next. There is very little time to intervene.

Canaries appear to be able to be particularly susceptible to West Nile virus. Experimental work has previously shown very rapid viral replication and high mortality in infected canaries. That may help explain the strikingly acute course we are seeing in this outbreak.

⚠️ What to watch for

- sudden fluffed-up posture, ruffled feathers
- lethargy, reduced activity
- reduced appetite
- neurological signs: twisted neck, loss of coordination, paralysis
unexpected deaths within a short period

🦟 What you can do yourself

- mosquito netting on windows and aviaries
- avoid standing water: refresh drinkers daily, cover water butts, empty saucers
- give birds extra protection at sunset, when mosquitoes are most active
- there is no vaccine for birds, mosquito control is your only real protection

Worth knowing: an infected bird does not pass the virus directly to people or to other animals. A mosquito is always needed.

And just as important: not every bird that dies suddenly has West Nile virus. Other causes can produce a similar picture. Sound diagnostics remain essential.
