Belgium makes sense as a place to source horses for a few very practical reasons 🇧🇪
First, it is deeply connected to sport-horse breeding. For a country of its size, the concentration is remarkable: Belgium has an estimated 47 horses per 1,000 inhabitants, 3 major Belgian sport-horse studbooks, and a breeding influence that reaches far beyond its borders. It is home to BWP, Zangersheide, and SBS, with BWP consistently ranked among the top 5 studbooks in the world, and Zangersheide registering more than 10,000 foals each year worldwide.
It also has serious infrastructure all year round. Between places like Sentower Park, Azelhof in Lier, and Zangersheide in Lanaken, there is constant movement: shows, young horse classes, inspections, championships, and a real concentration of riders, breeders, and producers. Lanaken has hosted the Young Horse World Championships since 1995, which says a great deal on its own about Belgium’s place in the sport.
And then there is geography. Belgium sits in the middle of a very strong equestrian region, with 4 major horse countries within easy reach and the Netherlands, Germany, and France especially close by. That makes it possible to build efficient trips and see very different types of horses within a relatively small radius.
That is one of the reasons Belgium feels like such a practical base to work from: not because everything is here, but because so much is within reach.
And for us, it is also home 🤍
