Stress-Related Hair Loss (Psychogenic Alopecia)
Cats are sensitive to changes in their environment and routine. Stress result over-grooming which leads to noticeable cat hair loss. Mostly the skin of the areas like belly, inner thigh and flank often appears smooth and intact.
Triggers include changes in the household such as a new pet, a move, loud noise, or disruptions to routine. Managing psychogenic alopecia involves identifying and addressing the stressor along with environmental enrichment to reduce anxiety. In some cases short-term anti-anxiety medications may be recommended. However a veterinary check-up is required to differentiate from other skin condition before medication/medications.
