Nirina Dog Adoptions Nirina Dog Shelter has been rescuing dogs since 2012. With only 4 staff, 2 women leading the shelter, and a few volunteers, we care for 200 dogs every day.

We receive little local support, so our work depends on donations.

On this page we present to you all our dogs from the Nirina Dog Shelter in Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Day and night work is carried out on the sheltersite as well as remotely to enable the dogs to lead a normal life. But everyday life is difficult without electricity, running water and 300 dogs to take care of. We try to find the best home for our dogs, because only a real home with a lot of attention and love will make a doglife worth living. So if those conditions are fullfilled, this is our procedure: you fall in love with a dog; how could it be any other way? Then you can contact us here on this page, or via email: [email protected]
After you have filled out the application form and we have agreed with it, we decide whether your home is suitable for one of our dogs. We will then make an appointment to send one of our representatives to do an actual homecheck with you. If everything is okay, your sweetheart can come to you. Ofcourse our dogs are all chipped and vaccinated. Before we send them out, of course they will be groomed and only then the big journey will begin. Please let us know beforehand which dog we should test on cats. and please don't be upset or disappointed if it doesn't work out. There are so many dogs here so we are sure you will be able to find your new best friend. Unfortunately, due to the number of dogs we cannot let cats run around here due to safety reasons. We hope you will enjoy our site! At the links below you can find our FB groups
Many of our dogs are also looking for virtual sponsors at just € 16 a month.

🥫🐾 LET'S FILL NIRINA'S PANTRY BEFORE WINTER!
ONE CAN – €1.35 – 1,230g OF HAPPINESS!

Winter is slowly approaching, and with almost 200 hungry mouths to feed, we have some serious preparations to make!
When temperatures drop, our dogs need more food and extra energy to stay warm. Our workers cook rice, pasta and other meals every day, and adding canned dog food makes those meals tastier, more nutritious and more filling.

And here's where YOU come in!
🥫 1 can = €1.35 🥫 2 cans = €2.70 🥫 5 cans = €6.75 🥫 10 cans = €13.50
Each can contains 1,230g of food!

🎯 OUR MISSION: FILL THE STORAGE ROOM BEFORE WINTER!
Imagine if everyone in this group donated just ONE can. Our shelves would be overflowing!
So, who's joining our little winter food challenge? 🙋‍♀️
Will you sponsor 1, 2, 5, 10 or even more cans?
Tell us in the comments how many cans you'd like to contribute! Let's see how many we can collect together!

🐾❤️ PLEASE HELP US REACH MORE PEOPLE!
Winter is slowly approaching, creeping into every corner of shelter life. The cold, the rain, the sick dogs, the increasing need for food and veterinary care… everything becomes harder, and every day costs more. 💔
We are already struggling, and sadly, our posts are reaching fewer and fewer people.
Please, share our posts. Comment, react and help us stay visible. 🙏
Because when our reach drops, so do our chances of getting the support we desperately need.
Another winter is coming, and we cannot get through it alone. 🥺❤️
Sometimes, something as simple as sharing a post can make all the difference for our dogs. 🐾

🐾❤️ SOME GOODBYES ARE HARDER THAN OTHERS…
Today, we have some news to share that comes with a heavy heart.
From November, our dear Leon Samira Crossan Leon Samira , our oldest volunteer and one of the most familiar and beloved faces at Nirina, will be retiring from his volunteer duties.
Not because he wants to, but because his health no longer allows him to do all the things he once did so tirelessly. And we know that this decision has not been easy for him. 💔
Where do we even begin to describe all the memories we have made together?
From rescuing dogs from the streets to spending countless hours with his beloved pack at the shelter. From joining us at fairs and events to becoming our very own Santa Claus, bringing smiles and Christmas magic. From sharing his knowledge during educational visits to simply being there whenever an extra pair of hands, a kind word or a familiar smile was needed.
Leon has been so much more than a volunteer.
Over the years, something truly special grew between us — a friendship built on trust, shared experiences, laughter, difficult days and, above all, a deep love for dogs.
He has been part of so many chapters of Nirina's story that it is almost impossible to imagine the shelter without him.
And perhaps that is the hardest part of all. Knowing that someone who has given so much of himself must now take a step back, even though his heart would gladly keep going.
Dear Leon,
There are simply not enough words to thank you for everything you have done, for every dog you helped, every kilometre you drove, every moment you shared with us and every piece of your heart you left at Nirina.
We are incredibly sad to see you retire, but even more grateful that life brought you into our little world.
And please remember one thing: you may be retiring as a volunteer, but you will never retire from being part of the Nirina family. ❤️

HINGS NOBODY SEES 👀🐾(take a look on all pics)
You see the dogs. The walks. The happy adoption photos. The “going home” posts.
But there is a whole other Nirina that rarely makes it to Facebook.
The 5,000 m² that need cleaning every single day — with a small team and around 200 four-legged professionals specialized in making things dirty again approximately five minutes later.
The generator humming in the background because we have no electricity. The pump, the cisterns and carrying water several times a day because we have no running water either. In summer, water almost becomes a full-time job of its own.
The shelter car that carries dogs almost every day — to the vet, from the street, to appointments, to transport — and therefore needs its own fair share of attention, cleaning and repairs. Dog hair comes as standard equipment.
The grass and vegetation around and inside the shelter that constantly need cutting and clearing. If we waited for someone else to take care of it, we are fairly sure the jungle would win.
The hours spent in veterinary waiting rooms. The examinations, treatments, blood tests and sometimes simply standing beside a dog while hearing things we really wish we didn't have to hear.
There is always something to repair. A hole to fill. A fence to fix. A kennel to patch. A dog house to repair. And our own little facilities need maintenance too — because people actually eat, sleep and live here while working.
Speaking of eating… there is our glamorous shelter kitchen. 😅
Meals prepared on one hot plate, dishes and cleaning without running water. Someone is here on duty for 24 hours at a time, and believe us — after enough night shifts, another sandwich starts looking less like dinner and more like a personal insult.
Then autumn arrives and it is time for wood, coal and everything needed to survive another winter.
And then there is the paperwork.
Invoices. Accounting. Reports for the authorities. Records. Documentation. Justifications. Donation records. VA lists. Walking lists. Veterinary records. Transport documents…
Apparently rescuing dogs also requires a minor degree in administration.
And finally — the laptop and the phone.
Transport arrangements. Pick-up points. Appointments. Adopters. Volunteers. Vets. Emails. Messages. Social media. Donations. Documents. Calls.
And calls.
And calls.
From all over Bosnia:
“We found a dog…”
“Can you take him?”
“There are puppies here…”
“Someone left a dog…”
At this point, we honestly don't even know who keeps giving out our phone numbers. 😂
Somehow everybody knows how to find Nirina when a dog is in trouble.
Finding people when Nirina needs an extra pair of hands?
Well… strangely, that search is usually much harder.
So yes — the dogs are the beautiful part you see. ❤️
But behind every clean kennel, every vet visit, every transport, every adoption photo and every happy tail leaving Nirina is an enormous amount of very unglamorous work.
This is also animal rescue.
Maybe not Social Media-worthy. But absolutely necessary. 🐾

Well… the elections are over.
And honestly, around here we stopped expecting miracles a long time ago. The same faces keep going round and round, and somehow it always feels like choosing the lesser evil. 😅
But after doing their civic duty, our volunteers know there is one choice they will never regret. 🐾❤️
If you are from Tuzla or the surrounding area, you can make a choice that actually changes something.
Come to Nirina. Take a leash into your own hands and change a shelter dog’s day — maybe even their life. A walk, a little attention, a few hours outside the shelter… to you it may seem small, but to them it means the world.
📩 Contact us and join our volunteers.
And please, don’t remember Nirina only when you find a dog you don’t know what to do with — or when your own pet suddenly becomes inconvenient.
We are not here to make life easier for people.
We are here for those innocent souls who still believe that tomorrow can be better.
And luckily, there are still people who believe it too.
Choose wisely. Choose kindness. Choose to show up.
