Rescuing stray cats from the streets of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

We are a group of friends and animal lovers who see the existing social problem of stray dogs and cats. Our capacities are very limited but we are highly committed to doing as much as we can. Due to a reduced number of dogs, stray cat population has increased and has thus become a new problem. We committed ourselves to the alleviation of suffering of stray cats in Sarajevo (and other places in Bosnia and Herzegovina) by providing food, medical treatment, sterilization and finding homes. We have a few primary locations with cat colonies, but every street is our location as well. When we see a sick, abandoned and at-risk cat, we take action by moving the cat to a foster home, providing the cat with necessary veterinary treatment, and finding an appropriate forever home. We are truly grateful to anyone who can help with food, information, physical help or finances to make both cats and humans happy friends.

A little over a month ago, she suddenly appeared out of nowhere. We had never seen her in this area before, and we know all the cats who live in this neighbourhood.

She was affectionate, frightened, and followed us everywhere we went, never leaving our side. It was almost as if she was trying to tell us something, as if she was desperately trying to draw our attention to something. πŸ₯ΊπŸ’”

She had appeared in an incredibly dangerous spot, a large parking lot right next to a busy road where cars speed by. And to make matters even worse, just recently, one of our beloved local cats had been killed by stray dogs in that very same area. πŸ’”

Her chances of survival were practically nonexistent. πŸ˜“

And we suspected she might be pregnant, too...

The hardest part? We had absolutely no options when it came to finding her a safe place. We were already beyond full, and adoptions for the cats we've rescued have been moving at a painfully slow pace β€” slower than a snail, honestly. πŸ₯Ή

We were heartbroken, imagining this poor little girl being abandoned, possibly pregnant, left to fend for herself in a place where danger lurked in every direction. Cars, dogs, and so many other threats… And there we were, desperately wanting to help her, yet with nowhere to take her.

If only we had a magic wand. If only love and good intentions were enough to make space where there was none. πŸ’”πŸ˜”

Sometimes, rescue means facing the heartbreaking reality that there are so many lives in need, and simply not enough hands, homes, or resources to save them all.

And yet, how could we possibly turn our backs on her? πŸ˜”β€οΈπŸΎ

Do you remember Wh***ey, the cat who was abandoned right in front of our eyes while we were feeding some of our other cats who are, sadly, still living on the streets? πŸ’”

Our sweet old boy is FIV-positive and suffers from severe oral disease, kidney insufficiency, and pancreatitis. But despite everything, he still eats like a champ! πŸ₯Ήβ€οΈ Every day, he eats three pouches of renal wet food and receives Ipakitine, Porus One, and other supplements to support his health.

His treatment and special diet are quite expensive, but his wonderful sponsor, Gabi❀️, does everything she can to provide him with what he needs. We are endlessly grateful for all the love and support she gives our sweet Wh***ey! ❀️ Thanks to her, we have already managed to order renal food for him from Croatia twice.

All of this has cost €132,34 so far. ❀️

A heartfelt thank you to our dear friend Azra Kaljanac, who bought everything and brought it all the way to Sarajevo. Sometime in July last year, a tourist visiting Mostar with her family reached out to us. They had crossed paths with a sweet cat right outside their accommodation, completely fell in love, and knew they couldn't leave him behind. They wanted to save him and take him all the way home to the Netherlands.

That’s how Danis’s journey began. We managed to find him a foster home, got him all his veterinary care, and discovered that he is FIV positive. Through it all, Danis waited so patiently for months while we worked on his preparations. The paperwork was our biggest headacheβ€”because in Bosnia, unfortunately, nothing ever happens the easy way. The legal process dragged on for months, but today, we can proudly say: we made it! πŸ€—πŸ˜‡πŸ₯°

Danis is finally safe, loved, and enjoying his forever home in the Netherlands. πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦βœˆοΈπŸ‡³πŸ‡±

There are so few people in this world like StΓ©phanie van Wissen and her family. ❀️ They found a cat in another city, brought him to Sarajevo, covered all his medical expenses, and then came all the way back from the Netherlands to Sarajevo just to pick him up and take him home.πŸ€—πŸ˜‡πŸ₯° Very few people would do so much for a rescue cat.

Meet our newest rescues: baby brother BEPPO (short PEPI) and his sweet sister VIVIENNE! 🐾🐾

A few weeks ago, these two helpless souls showed up at the home of one of our team member's parents. They were immediately welcomed with food and love, but out of nowhere, both of them suddenly stopped eating… πŸ₯ΉπŸ˜“

We rushed them to the vet, and our worst fears came trueβ€”they tested positive for Coronavirus. πŸ’” It was a critical, touch-and-go situation, and they were truly saved at the very last second. If we hadn't acted immediately, who knows if they would even be alive today. 😭❀️

But they are true little fighters! After undergoing intensive daily therapies, we can proudly and happily say they officially beat the virus! πŸ€—πŸ˜‡πŸ₯°

The passing of every one of our furry companions hurts, but some losses leave an especially profound mark.

A cat who brought immeasurable joy to the life of one of our team members. A cat who inspired the very beginning of a journey called Home for Every Cat and, through her story, opened the door for so many others to follow.
It feels impossible to fully capture the life Luna lived.
Luni Lu, Lunchi Munchi... a truly extraordinary and deeply loved cat. She was an adventurer, a traveler, a mountain explorer, and a lover of nature who enjoyed wandering through forests, hiking mountain trails, and discovering new places. She faced every challenge with remarkable strength and courage. If ever there was a feline lioness, it was Luna.

Dear Luna, thank you for making your family's life brighter, richer, and more beautiful. Thank you for teaching us that love for a cat knows no limits. Ain't no mountain high enough... You will forever be remembered as our fearless hiker, our little model, our mischievous explorer, and one of the most unique cats we have ever had the privilege of knowing.
We are grateful to have been a small part of your journey. We hope that now you are wandering through endless meadows, rolling in soft grass, feeling the warmth of the sun on your fur, and breathing in the scent of the sea.
Give all our beloved souls a kiss from us, and we promise to take good care of A.❀️

We fed Fata for a long time, and unfortunately, many cats lost their lives at that location, either hit by cars or attacked by stray dogs πŸ₯Ή. So, as soon as a spot opened up in foster care, she was rescued from that risky area πŸ€—πŸ₯° Pixie and Fata truly found their happiness πŸ€—πŸ˜‡β€οΈ
