Spring has sprung, the grass is riz - I wonder where the kittens is?

Probably not far away! Spring is prime kitten season and soon there will be the pitter patter of tiny little kitten paws behind the shed, under the bushes, in the backseat of your car if you left the window open.....

So, what do you do if the long-awaited day arrives and the Cat Distribution System has decided it's finally your turn to find a bunch of adorable kittens? Do you really want to take them all home now? Is that the best thing for them?

The Kitten Lady, an authority on kitten rescue, suggests using the CASA approach before bundling those cute little kittens - and their perhaps not so cute hissy mother - into the nearest cat carrier.

CASA* stands for Condition Age Situation Ability. If the kittens are still very young (Age), healthy (Condition), in a safe place and their mum is around (Situation), it's often best to leave them where they are - and let a cat rescue organisation such as Yass Valley Cat Rescue know (Ability) so they can monitor them and take them into their care when they are old enough to be fostered for adoption. If you can't see mum, wait at a safe distance or come back later - she may just be away getting food, rather than having abandoned her babies. Taking the kittens without mum not only means they may need to be bottle-fed day and night, but also that mum misses out on being de-sexed and the cycle continues....

On the other hand, if the kittens look unhealthy (Condition), or you find them in a box on the side of the road with no sign of mum (Situation), you should let a cat rescue organisation know immediately - as well as consider your ability to take them home and look after them, given the often limited resources of cat rescues during peak kitten season in spring (Ability).

A happy adoption story - Amber kitten and Stevie ( formerly Mr Stique) are thriving in their new home together.
Catherine says - These guys are good friends now. Stevie is still a scaredy cat but gets braver every day. Our kitty is happy and adventurous.
I saw the tabby you posted about yesterday and thought about having 3, for a few minutes!’

Hard to believe but no- one is showing interest in Chris the gorgeous green-eyed male Tabby. He is a lovely boy maybe 9 months old and waiting patiently for you ❤️

Looking for help - do you have the skills and could you donate some time to help us with grooming (shaving?) this poor cat?

She has come from a family break up and the mats in her medium length fur are well beyond our capabilities. We know it is probably uncomfortable for her so we would like to get her sorted ASAP.

Update on the cats from the drains.
Firstly, thank you to everyone for your concern.

Cat 1 ‘Creamy’ was found to be about 2 years old. She did not have a microchip and was not desexed. Unfortunately, this meant she was not the lost cat that had been reported to us. She has now been vet checked, chipped, vaxed and desexed and she has been adopted by someone living nearby who had been feeding her.

Cat 2 had been reported to us over recent weeks as looking quite sick and with something wrong with her tail. After a few failed attempts at trapping her we were finally successful. She did not spend the night by the drain as has been suggested. The vet check revealed that she was very old and had no teeth. On top of her tail problem she had cat flu (which was affecting her eyes and breathing) and the vet thought thyroid and kidney issues were also evident. It is never an easy decision but we agreed that in the circumstances it would be a kindness to euthanise her.

Sammy is looking for an empire to call her own.

This magnificent female cat has shown up at a farm that is already home to six rescued cats.

Sammy is a really large cat, friendly, but intimidating to other cats and she would be perfect as solo queen of her domain.

She walks like a wild cat and there is some speculation as to her ancestry. 🤷‍♀️

Looking for a friendly female cat? Then look no further. Today we are introducing fabulous Squizz. Squizz is Nook and Cranny’s mum.

She is maybe 18 months old? Good with both kids and dogs and very smoochy. Relaxed enough to make friends at the vets when she went to get desexed. What a ⭐️

Good news. This sweetie has apparently been living in a drain in Yass for ages 😢 but the good news is that a kind local has been putting out food and we now have her safe. We will check for a microchip and do some vet work and then we think the person who has been feeding will adopt ❤️

Avon is a shy girl but loving once she gets to know you. This black and white ‘catten’ is a real stunner and at about 11 months old is well-trained in all respects and only needs someone to love. As you can see from the photo she is fine with other cats but she will do best in a quiet home.
